    Job Title: Assistant Athletic Coach - High School
    Classification: Extra Comp
    Supervisor: Building Principal
    Days: Athletic Season

    General Statement of Responsibilities

    The Assistant Coach will work to carry out the aims and objectives of the sports program as outlined by the Head Coach. The Assistant Coach instructs athletes in individual and team fundamentals, strategy, and physical training necessary to realize individual and team success. This job description intends to give sufficient guidance to function. A coach shall exercise common sense and good judgment in cases not explicitly covered. The Assistant Coach supervises athletes and the assigned team and assumes authority over all athletes in the program when supervision and leadership are needed.

    Supervision Received

    The Assistant Coach is responsible to the building principal and Head Coach.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    Has a thorough knowledge of all the Athletic Policies endorsed by the Medford School District Board of Education and is responsible for its compliance.
    Knows Oregon School Activities Association rules and regulations and Southern Oregon Conference Guidelines; implements those consistently and is responsible for compliance.
    Understands the proper administrative line of command and refers to all requests or grievances through appropriate channels.
    Works to increase morale and cooperation within the school's athletic program.
    Knows effective safety procedures in their sport, plans and implements a program of instruction in safe practices.

    Administrative Duties

    Assists the Head Coach in scheduling and making travel arrangements when asked.
    Works with the Head Coach to prepare and adhere to scheduled facility times.
    Assists the Head Coach in complying with district and OSAA requirements concerning physical examinations, parental consent forms, insurance waivers, and academic/residence eligibility.
    Assists the Head Coach in providing proper safeguards for maintaining and protecting assigned equipment and facilities and teaching the planned safety program.

    Student Responsibilities

    Supervises the athletes before, during, and after practices, contests, or while traveling; provides guidance and safeguards for each participant.
    Follows the program implemented by the Head Coach related to injuries, medical attention, and emergencies, and works cooperatively with the athletic trainer in injury, prevention, and the care and rehabilitation of athletic injuries.
    Directs student managers, assistants, and statisticians on respective teams.
    Determines discipline following State, District, and school guidelines, policies, and procedures. Teaches athletes rules and procedures concerning due process when enforcing discipline is necessary. Contacts parents when a student is dropped or ineligible for team rule infractions.

    Equipment and Facilities

    Is accountable to the Head Coach for all equipment and assists in identifying lost or stolen equipment and issuing fine and hold notices to the Activities Office.
    Monitors equipment rooms and coach's office and authorizes who may enter.
    Examines locker rooms before and after practices and games, checking on the general cleanliness of the facility.
    If custodians are not on duty, secure all doors, lights, windows, and locks before leaving the building.
    Instills in each player respect for equipment and school property, its care, and proper use.

    Program Responsibilities

    Assists the Head Coach in carrying out their responsibilities.
    Instruct team members about changes in the rules and teaches fundamentals of the sport as outlined by the Head Coach.
    Maintains a record of team statistics and requirements for lettering as assigned by the Head Coach.
    Works within the basic framework and philosophy of the Head Coach of that sport.
    Attends all staff meetings as required by the Head Coach.
    Arrives early before practice and contests to adequately prepare and remain long enough afterward to help players with problems or participate in staff discussions.
    Helps in planning and implementing both in-season and off-season conditioning and weight programs.
    Never criticizes, admonish, or argue with the Head Coach or any staff member within earshot or in front of players, parents, or fans.
    Strives to improve skills by attending clinics and using resources made available by the Head Coach.
    Attends most of the contests, when possible, of other teams in the program.
    Performs other duties consistent with the position's nature and the Head Coach's requests.

    Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    Knowledge of

    Rules and regulations of the sport to which assigned.
    Fundamentals, techniques, and strategies of the sport to which assigned.
    Safety factors involved in the sport assigned.
    Physical ability and limitations of the level they are teaching.
    The Medford School District Athletic Policies and OSAA Rules and Regulations.

    Skills

    Must possess the ability to communicate effectively with people.
    Must be able to demonstrate basic skills of sport to which assigned.
    Must be able to organize, supervise, and evaluate the total sports program.

    Attitudes

    Must be positive.
    Should be enthusiastic.
    Should possess a willingness to cooperate and adjust to various situations.

    Experience

    Previous coaching experience of sport to which assigned is preferred.
    Previous experience as a participant in sport to which assigned is preferred.
    Previous teaching experience preferred.

    Education

    Valid Oregon teacher certification is preferred.
    College training in coaching is desirable.
