Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital (CRMH) is a 763-bed academic medical center affiliated with the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. As an academic facility with a Level I trauma center, this tertiary care institution has numerous post-graduate training programs, including multiple medical, surgical, and psychiatry residencies and fellowships.
The CRMH inpatient psychiatry location is licensed for 43 adult beds and 23 child/adolescent beds. The Clinical Specialist in Psychiatric Pharmacy provides comprehensive pharmaceutical care to adults, adolescents, and children in the inpatient psychiatry units to assure safe and effective drug therapy. The Clinical Specialist in Psychiatric Pharmacy will develop and maintain a clinical practice by collaborating with attending providers and residents on the inpatient psychiatry teams to assist with medication management of complex psychiatric disease states and chronic medical conditions. Rounding experiences include academic team-based rounds and interdisciplinary rounds.
Facilitating continuity of medication-related care from admission through discharge is a focus. Additional activities include collaborating with the Psychiatry Department to develop policies and protocols that provide effective and efficient use of medications, educating patients and health care providers, reviewing and processing medication orders, and providing consultation for psychiatry providers in the ED and ambulatory settings. This position would also include relevant committee representation, staff education, and precepting pharmacy students. This position would be directly involved in precepting an elective rotation for PGY1 pharmacy residents and PGY2 internal medicine pharmacy residents. Opportunities for involvement in the psychiatry residency and fellowship programs also exist.
Qualified candidates must be a graduate of a College of Pharmacy accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) and must possess a current Virginia pharmacist license or be eligible for licensure. An ASHP-accredited PGY1 Pharmacy Residency is required and specialized PGY2 residency training in Psychiatric Pharmacy is preferred. Applicants must possess excellent leadership, communication, interpersonal and teamwork skills, as well as demonstrate advanced skills in critical thinking and analysis. Must be able to effectively budget time, work efficiently and accurately, and follow procedures with minimum supervision.
Education: Must be a graduate of a College of Pharmacy accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE).
Experience: ASHP-accredited Pharmacy Practice Residency required for all new hires or transfers as of August 1, 2011. Specialized residency training in respective patient care area is preferred.
Licensure, certification, and/or registration: License to practice Pharmacy in the Commonwealth of Virginia required within 90 days of hire. During the first 90 days of employment and the licensure application process, pharmacists without a valid license to practice pharmacy in the Commonwealth of Virginia may not perform duties restricted to a licensed pharmacist until the license is obtained. If the license is not obtained within 90 days of employment, the employee may be subject to separation from Carilion Clinic.
Other Minimum Qualifications: Must possess good leadership, communication, interpersonal and teamwork skills. Must be able to effectively budget time, work efficiently and accurately, and follow procedures with minimum supervision. Excellent critical thinking and analytical skills.
