    GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:


    Working as a Research Technician I, will assist in investigations related to biology and therapeutics of cutaneous melanoma and other skin tumors/cancers.


    Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to, performing experiments for research projects under the supervision of postdoctoral fellows, lab managers and senior research technologists.

    Common techniques include preparing and cultivating human and murine cell lines and routine in-vitro cancer assays. Will complete collection of and accurate recording of procedures and results and maintenance of databases used in the lab. Participate in joint upkeep of the lab.

    Apply understanding of laboratory research along with some familiarity with basic computational biology.


    PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Carries out a wide range of basic and moderately to complex lab techniques such as, but not limited to, routine cell culture work under sterile conditions, viability studies on 2D and in 3D spheroids, standard microscopy, basic molecular biology (e.g. cell transfection, plasmid preparation), flow cytometry, histology, and in vitro drug exposure experiments. These techniques may be modified as necessary to meet research and/or experimental needs.
    • Collects and records study data. Synthesizes and interprets information obtained from graphs, charts, laboratory experiments, statistical summaries and other data collection methods in order to develop new investigative techniques and/or to determine the most appropriate direction of research. Synthesis may involve use of computer programs as well as data entry into databases.
    • Organizes and accurately maintains written records of experimental procedures and data generated. Reports information to senior investigators and/or senior research personnel.
    • Operates and maintains moderate to complex lab equipment such as spectrophotometer, plate reader, centrifuges, flow cytometer, and other scientific equipment related to research activity.
    • Participates in and may present data at weekly lab meetings and journal clubs and assists in preparation of research data for presentation or publication by others.
    • Provides general maintenance of the laboratory including preparation of basic solutions and reagents.
    • Tracks laboratory supply inventory and alerts Manager when new supplies to be ordered.
    • Participates in the upkeep of the lab; this includes keeping both direct and general work spaces clean and tidy and helping maintain an overall safe and clean environment. May perform, or refer as needed, routine maintenance of lab and office equipment to include cleaning and replacing of parts. Report equipment malfunctions and needs to management.
    • Learns new techniques as required for projects. Discusses any observed experimental conditions that may need to be modified with PI and/or Senior personnel.
    • Assists senior technicians and research managers with additional special projects, as needed.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

    • Must be self-motivated and able to work independently under close supervision
    • Must possess good verbal, written, and organizational skills
    • Proficiency in Word, Power point, Excel, and Internet searches preferred
    • Must be reliable, pay attention to details and be capable of working independently to perform basic laboratory procedures
    • Must have a basic understanding of the theory behind the tests and procedures
    • Must work well as part of a team and be able to take direction from senior technical and administrative staff

    EDUCATION:

    • Bachelor's degree in biology or other scientific discipline required.

    EXPERIENCE:
    * · Minimum of one year of directly-related experience is preferred. Knowledge of cellular and/or molecular laboratory techniques (either through experience or coursework) is required.


    WORKING CONDITIONS:
    Duties will be performed in a research laboratory.

    This setting may create contact or exposure to one or more of the following:
    chemicals, fluids, sharp instruments and other supplies and equipment consistent with a research lab. Contact or exposure may be airborne or physical. Work schedule may be flexible and may require evening, weekend or holiday hours.
