    Job Description:


    This position performs the daily tasks and responsibilities associated with the maintenance and functionality of the Louisiana Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory's (LADDL's) necropsy laboratory and cremation and carcass disposal services.

    The incumbents must be prepared to handle carcasses and tissues of various animal species, including primates that may be infected with various infectious agents and zoonotic pathogens.

    Maintain the highest professional standards, promote excellent customer service to internal and external constituents, and commit to providing excellent diagnostic service to LADDL clients.

    In addition to a typical work schedule, may be scheduled to work weekends, work split shifts, overtime, and holidays, and attend scientific meetings or training, as necessary.


    Job Responsibilities:
    50% - Receiving animals for necropsy and cremation at the loading dock and completing paperwork for all submissions.

    Must be able to lift, move, manipulate, and/or hold up to 75 pounds unassisted and push/pull carts or forklifts containing up to 1000 pounds.

    Prepare animals for necropsy, including obtaining weights for animals >200 pounds. Alert the duty pathologist and resident(s) of any special requests or problems with the submitted animals.

    The incumbent will perform appropriate disposal of all animals submitted to the necropsy laboratory and tissues and laboratory animals from LSU Vet Med and LSU campus.

    This includes group incineration of small and large animals and private cremations. The process remains for private cremations and returning fully documented ashes to LADDL receiving. Complete all documentation related to incineration and private cremation. Packaging and shipping of cremains. Coordination of cremations between LADDL and VTH. Cleaning, pressure washing, organizing, and maintenance of the necropsy laboratory, associated dock areas, and disposal areas. Disinfect the necropsy laboratory coolers according to LADDL SOPs. The incumbent will operate a forklift, band saw, steam cleaner, electric crane and hoist, and incinerator. Cleaning and maintenance of incinerators and record and report temperature records to LSU EHS. Assure that the necropsy laboratory is prepared for necropsy with adequate routine supplies and sharpened knives and scissors. Prepares various types of chemical tissue fixatives for preservation of tissue samples for diagnostic and teaching purposes.


    20% - Assure that the necropsy room is prepared for necropsy with adequate routine supplies, fixatives (e.g., 10% buffered formalin), and sharpened knives and scissors.

    Storage, documentation, and disposal of saved tissues, whether fixed in formalin or frozen, from necropsy or SVM biopsies. Properly dispose of hazardous chemicals. Maintain and organize the tissue storage and trimming rooms in LADDL. This includes storage, documentation, and disposal of saved tissues, whether fixed in formalin or frozen, from necropsy or biopsies. Clean and catalog -80C and -20C freezers. Properly dispose of hazardous chemicals.


    20% - The incumbent will learn to perform all of the above job duties under the supervision of the other senior necropsy technicians/lab supervisor, pathologists, and residents and is expected to be competent in basic techniques in 1 year.


    The training includes the following:

    Following quality control, quality assurance, safety, and biosafety/infection control procedures, Performing equipment/instrument maintenance and troubleshooting, maintaining appropriate inventory of supplies, maintaining effective communication and working relationships with all laboratory personnel, other disciplines, and external customers.


    10% - Maintain the highest professional standards, promote excellent customer service to internal and external constituents, and commit to providing excellent diagnostic pathology and cremation services to LADDL clients.

    Perform other duties assigned by the pathologists, residents, pathology section head, laboratory supervisor, or the LADDL director.


    Minimum Qualifications:
    High School Diploma, excellent communication skills and effective customer service skills are needed.


    Preferred Qualifications:
    Bachelor's degree with 1-2 years of experience.

    Specific Experience - Excellent communication skills and effective customer service skills are needed. Diagnostic laboratory experience, histology or clinical pathology laboratory experience, other lab experience or veterinary technician experience. Experience with Microsoft Office suite.
