Summary Of Position
The Special Projects Group Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate, timely, and competitive cost estimates for small- to mid-sized mechanical construction projects, typically fast-track, negotiated, or design-build work.
This role supports projects such as tenant improvements, renovations, service-related construction, and quick-turn capital work, often requiring close coordination with project managers, engineers, vendors, and clients.
Major ActivitiesEstimating & Preconstruction
Prepare detailed mechanical estimates for HVAC, plumbing, piping, and associated systems
Perform quantity takeoffs from drawings, sketches, and specifications
Analyze drawings for constructability, scope gaps, and value-engineering opportunities
Solicit, evaluate, and level vendor and subcontractor quotes
Develop conceptual and budgetary estimates for early-stage projects
Assist with pricing change orders and scope revisions
Project Support
Work closely with Special Projects Project Managers to transition awarded work
Participate in pre-bid meetings, site walks, and client meetings as needed
Support fast-track bids with quick turnaround and high accuracy
Maintain estimating databases, historical cost data, and labor productivity factors
Client & Internal Coordination
Communicate clearly with owners, general contractors, vendors, and internal teams
Support negotiated and repeat-client work with transparent pricing strategies
Assist in identifying risk, schedule impacts, and cost drivers
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
3+ years of estimating experience in mechanical contracting (HVAC, plumbing, piping)
Strong understanding of mechanical systems, materials, and labor productivity
Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications
Proficiency with estimating software and takeoff tools (e.g., Trimble, FastPIPE, Bluebeam, Excel)
Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple fast-paced estimates
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with tenant improvement, renovation, or service-driven construction projects
Familiarity with design-build and negotiated project delivery
Field experience or background in mechanical installation
Knowledge of local codes and industry standards
Physical & Work Environment Requirements
Office-based with occasional jobsite visits
Fast-paced environment with frequent short-duration projects
Collaboration with estimating, operations, service, and engineering teams
Education & Experience
2-5 years of experience in construction estimating or related construction roles
Proven experience performing quantity takeoffs, cost analysis, and bid preparation
Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and contracts
Experience with estimating software such as Trimble, Bluebeam, Procore, or similar tools
Strong understanding of construction methods, materials, labor costs, and subcontractor pricing
