    Department Overview


    The Vaccine and Gene Therapy Institute (VGTI) at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) has assembled a multidisciplinary team of scientists to respond to serious viral disease threats, including AIDS, chronic viral infection-associated diseases, newly emerging viral diseases and infectious diseases of the elderly.

    Our programs are intended to span the continuum between basic and clinical science, in which discoveries are rapidly advanced from the level of molecular and cellular biology through animal models and ultimately into clinical testing.

    The development of this unique program in immunology and virology provides an important training opportunity for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows at OHSU.

    This is why an important part of our mission is the training of young scientists in newer academic disciplines emerging at the Vaccine and Gene Therapy Institute.

    Function/Duties of Position


    The Vaccine and Gene Therapy Institute (VGTI), located at the West Campus of Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU), has assembled a multidisciplinary team of scientists to respond to serious infectious disease threats, including AIDS, tuberculosis, chronic viral infection-associated diseases, newly emerging infectious diseases, and infectious diseases of the elderly.

    The successful candidate will support ongoing and newly funded research projects of the Labriola Laboratory and collaborating investigators at the VGTI and ONPRC, with a focus on non-human primate (NHP) models of infectious disease.

    The Labriola Laboratory has a strong emphasis on experimental pathology, and a Research Assistant 2 will contribute to post-mortem prosection, sample collection, and image capture at necropsy.

    The applicant may work in concert with other laboratory staff on the West Campus to accomplish a variety of hands-on procedures with NHPs such as collecting and processing tissues, phlebotomy, administrating experimental compounds/ anti-retroviral drugs/ medications, and monitoring of NHPs during procedures as dictated by study design.

    They may provide technical and administrative support for a range of projects, prepare data sets and reports, coordinate with surgical and clinical teams, and regulatory documentation as applicable.

    They will be responsible for general lab support duties, including maintenance of laboratory supplies/ equipment, sample collection preparation, sample storage and organization, and sanitation.

    Prior relevant experience is considered beneficial, though training for specific projects and procedures will be provided.


    • Willingness to work with pathogens potentially dangerous to humans
    • Willingness to work in Animal Biosafety Level 2 and 3 facilities
    • Ability and willingness to work on a team and independently
    • Ability to lift and carry 50lbs
    • Manual dexterity to handle surgical tools, sharps, and laboratory equipment
    • Ability to stand for extended periods
    • Experience with Excel, PowerPoint, and Photoshop is advantageous
    Required Qualifications


    • Bachelor's in relevant field OR
    • Associate's AND 3 years of relevant experience OR
    • 4 years of relevant experience OR
    • Equivalent combination of training and experience
    • Ability to communicate effectively, including use and meaning of scientific terminology, in both written and oral formats;
    • Ability to work both independently and in a small group setting.
    • 6 months relevant work experience in Microsoft Excel, Word;
    • Demonstrated independence and competence to perform data management and analysis of research finding, including use of spreadsheets, graphics and statistical programs;
    • Ability to interact in a positive and productive manner, and to work efficiently and skillfully with a variety of diverse staff;
    • Ability to prioritize work demands, and coordinate research protocols with other staff;
    • Organizational skills and careful attention to details to satisfactorily perform job duties requiring procedural steps to be consistent and completed fully and timely;
    • Detailed record keeping, cataloging of samples, data entry and statistical analysis, laboratory maintenance, autoclaving and use of sterile techniques.
    Preferred Qualifications


    • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Zoology, Animal sciences, Immunology, Pathology or related field.
    • Strong interest or experience in experimental pathology and necropsy procedures.
    • Demonstrated experience supporting in vivo research with laboratory animals, especially non-human primates.
    • One-year laboratory or field work.
    • Experience maintaining inventories of laboratory supplies and equipment.
    • Experience working with nonhuman primates conducting sedation, phlebotomy, aseptic technique, injections, sample collections (BAL, feces, urine) and necropsies.
    • Experience working in ABSL 2+ and 3 facilities.
