    Wytheville Community College is seeking a Student Support Services Outreach Advisor. This position is federally funded and works with low-income, first-generation college students. The position is housed on the Wytheville campus with occasional work at off-campus sites. The responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
  • Assisting participants with course selection and registration, financial literacy information, transfer process, and completing Financial Aid and scholarship applications;
  • Developing and facilitating informational workshops to program participants;
  • Assisting students in completing the online FAFSA form;
  • Inputting documentation and generating reports from the Student Support Services database;
  • Office Management such as maintaining files, answering phones, and ordering supplies;
  • Purchasing with the state of Virginia Purchasing card and completion of monthly reconcilement reports;
  • Conducting SSS recruitment presentations in Orientation classes and other classes when asked;
  • Assisting with the coordination of cultural activities and events; and
  • Generating a monthly SSS program newsletter and calendar.
  • Special Assignments

    May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

    KSA's/Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college in Human Services, Social Work, Adult Education or a related field;
  • Experience providing assistance with academic advising and course selection, completing financial aid and scholarship applications, and transfer processes;
  • Knowledge of Federal Financial Aid processes, financial literacy activities, and related services for low-income, first-generation students;
  • Ability to engage, provide support to, and motivate students;
  • Experience in facilitating educational workshops;
  • Experience with state of Virginia Purchasing card and regulations or similar card;
  • Knowledge of student data base systems;
  • Ability to relate to a diverse student population;
  • Experience maintaining confidential files/records;
  • Ability to perform data entry;
  • Excellent oral and written skills; and
  • Proven record of excellent customer service skills and demonstrated professionalism.
  • Additional Considerations
  • Experience working in a TRiO program;
  • Experience working in Higher Education; and
  • Knowledge of barriers to post-secondary education faced by low-income and first-generation college students.
