Reporting to the Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Dean serves as the administrator for academic programs in Biology, Exercise Science (Fitness & Wellness / Pre-Athletic Training), Interdisciplinary Studies, Mass Communications, Music, Psychology, General Education (English, Mathematics, and Religion & Philosophy). The Dean is responsible for ensuringinnovative and transformative teaching, research, and scholarship in the College of Humanities, Arts and Science.     Job Summary:

    The Dean is responsible for ensuringinnovative and transformative teaching, research, and scholarship in the School of Arts Sciences and the Humanities.     Essential Job Functions:

    • Provide leadership in advocating for excellence in higher education by encouraging and facilitating high standards of academic quality through the appointment of appropriately credentialed faculty, admission of qualified students, and high expectations for student achievement and program assessment.
    • Provide leadership in the execution of the strategic vision for comprehensive academic planning and programming, student recruitment and retention initiatives, and policy development as it pertains to the university.
    • Inspire leadership and assure continued prominence of the faculty by prioritizing the recruitment, continued development, and retention of faculty that will promote and enhance a strong research agenda and inspire excellence in teaching and learning best practices.
    • Ensure compliance with university policies and procedures.
    • Engage corporate and external stakeholders in academic program evaluation to enhance student preparedness for job placement.
    • Secure external funding from federal agencies, corporations, foundations, and interested donors to support the university's mission and develop relevant industry and professional partnerships.
    • Effectively apply knowledge and understanding of the assigned academic programs and activities, as they relate to the development of effective strategic objectives, to create and manage appropriate outcomes-based assessment.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of institutional structure and development at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
    • Promote, coordinate and support cross discipline-specific activities within the college, such as research efforts, funding possibilities, joint symposia, speaker series, and other activities.
    • Serve to advise the Vice President on matters of academic policy, personnel, and budget.
    • Relate to people in a manner as to win confidence, support, and understanding in the purposes, programs, and fundraising goals of the University.
    • Work effectively with faculty in the development of their Professional Development Plan (PDP) to set teaching, research and service goals for the upcoming academic year; perform timely coaching, counseling, and evaluation of job performance; and address areas needing improvement from prior evaluations.
    • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
    Supervisory Responsibilities

    FT Faculty; PT-Adjunct Faculty (Main site & Adult Degree Sites); Program Directors and Administrative Support Personnel

    Required Education and/or Experience
    • Earned Doctorate from an accredited institution of higher learning in Biology, Exercise Science (Fitness & Wellness / Pre-Athletic Training), Mass Communications, Music, Psychology, or General Education (English, Mathematics, or Religion & Philosophy)
    • Five years of progressive experience including a combination of college-level teaching and administrative experience required.
    • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with faculty and staff at all levels in the University as both a facilitator and a leader.
    • Strong innovative and collaborative skills with an exceptional capacity for working as part of a team.
    • Excellent leadership skills with the ability to prioritize and oversee multiple projects simultaneously.
    • Prior supervisory experience at the Department Chair, Division Head or Dean level.
    • Strong research skills, including design, implementation, and reporting.
    • Minimum of three years of university teaching experience.
    • Demonstrated understanding of federal grant regulations.
    • Proven track record of securing external funding.
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
    • Strong organizational skills.
    • Must possess the minimum credential standards of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), which normally includes at least 18 graduate semester credit hours in the subject area or suitable approved justifications.
    Preferred Education and/or Experience
    • Strong time-management, project management, decision-making, and organizational skills.
    • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, set priorities and meet deadlines.
    • Demonstrated understanding and a strong commitment to cultural diversity.
    • Experience with publishing and/or presenting research.
    • Demonstrated written and oral communication skills.

    Certificates, Licenses, or Registrations

    Must possess the minimum credential standards of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), which normally includes at least 18 graduate semester credit hours in the subject area or suitable approved justifications.
