We are dedicated to working with Wisconsinites while preserving and enhancing the natural resources of Wisconsin.

In partnership with individuals and organizations; DNR staff manage fish, wildlife, forests, parks, air and water resources while promoting a healthy, sustainable environment and a full range of outdoor opportunities.


The Wisconsin DNR is hiring up to five (5) LTE (Limited Term Employee) Fisheries Technicians for our Lake Michigan Field Units.

These positions are expected to begin in April and work through September.


The five (5) positions may be stationed in Milwaukee, Plymouth, Sturgeon Bay (low rent housing may be available), Kewaunee, and/or Two Rivers, WI.

These workstations will be assigned as positions become available.

Position Summary

These positions provide opportunities to gain valuable experience working with the WI DNR. You'll build your skills handling fish and working with the public on a daily basis.

The numerous fish you'll encounter will expand your ability to obtain biological data while improving your identification skills at the same time.

Additionally, creel surveys are the best tool that fisheries managers have to monitor recreational harvest.

Incumbents of these positions will learn the intricacies of such surveys and develop skills that can be applied in future fisheries management careers.

These positions are responsible for performing creel clerk duties independently or under general supervision. The positions will interview anglers, identify and measure angler-caught fish, record data, collate and enter the collected data.

They will also provide information to anglers and the public on local fisheries topics and may also prepare written creel reports.

Salary Information


These positions pay between $ $18.58 per hour and are in pay schedule and range Compensation will be set in accordance with the State Compensation Plan.

Job Details


This is a Limited Term Employment (LTE) position and will not automatically lead to permanent state employment or be entitled to the same benefits as permanent employees.

May accommodate flexibility for part-time or full-time work hours and seasonal schedules. Work schedules are dependent on business needs.
Allow individuals to hold multiple LTE appointments concurrently. If both LTE positions are at the same agency, the positions must be bona fide different positions. Each individual LTE position allows for maximum of 1039 hours in a twelve-month period.

Special Requirements

Residency:
To be considered for this position, you must be a resident of the State of Wisconsin.

A Wisconsin Resident Is a Person Who

Has established a residence, as defined in s , in this state not less than 10 days earlier;
Has resided in this state for not less than a total of one year out of the immediately preceding 5 years;
Is eligible to register to vote in this state; or
Is the spouse of a person meeting the requirements of par. (a), (b), or (c)." s , Wis. Stats.

Qualifications

In addition to the required qualifications below, the selected candidate must be eligible to drive a state vehicle and meet the following criteria:

Have a valid driver's license
Be at least 18 years of age
Have a minimum of two years licensed driving experience
Have not had three (3) or more moving violations and/or at-fault accidents in the past two (2) years
Have no OWI/DUI violations within the past year

Qualified Candidates Will Have

Ability to accurately identify common Lake Michigan fish to species name
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Ability to work independently with limited supervision
Ability to approach anglers where they commonly fish - this includes piers and breakwaters, rocky shorelines, open sand, cobble beaches, and along streams and rivers over uneven terrain
Ability and willingness to work in inclement weather
Ability and willingness to work all weekends and holidays, as well as early morning and late evening hours according to an irregular assigned schedule
Availability to work through September 30

In addition to possessing all of the required qualifications, well qualified candidates will have:

Prior completion of fisheries related college courses
Prior experience working or volunteering in fisheries
