    The Director of Nursing is responsible for providing support, coordination, development and direction to Behavioral Health Nursing Units. The Director of Nursing implements operating policies and procedures; maintains and improves the level of patient care and standards of care on assigned units; assures compliance with established standards, practices and regulatory requirements by all personnel. The Director of Nursing must also be a Nurse Practitioner.

    PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Organizes assigned areas in Nursing Services to improve quality of patient care, obtain maximum utilization of staff and achieve increased utilization. Participates in defining the functions and qualifications for all service line positions.
    • Participates in the development of Hospital and Nursing services polices and practice guidelines which are consistent with the philosophies of the Hospital. Utilizes and promotes familiarization with quality vision statement and practices. Provides input for the development and implementation of the annual strategic and marketing plans.
    • Actively participates on various committees as requested, or as appropriate to meet the needs, mission and organizational plans of the hospital.
    • Acts as a liaison between assigned services and other hospital employees, patients, families, visitors and physicians as appropriate, ensuring that assistance provided is helpful and reflects the positive attitudes and philosophy of the hospital when dealing with others.
    • Collaborates with other health care agencies in planning, implementing and evaluating patient care delivery systems and participates in planning and implementing new programs and marketing approaches for assigned service line and/or hospital.
    • Coordinates the activities of multiple functions within assigned Nursing units to ensure efficient and competent patient care and customer satisfaction. Supports Nurse Managers in implementation and evaluation of the patient care delivery system, ensures a responsible quality improvement program, and provides an effective system of communication on/and problem solving among managers and staff.
    • Develops accurate and complete job descriptions for positions within own department(s) and ensures that they are reviewed annually making revisions as necessary. Interviews and select staff for own department in coordination with Human Resources, ensuring that all established and legal recruitment policies and procedures are followed. Develops and maintains relationships with key physicians, including support for physician recruitment.
    • Promotes maximum growth and efficiency for managers by delegating responsibilities within scope of personal abilities. Provides orientation, training and in-servicing for new and present staff to ensure personal development of staff as well as compliance with various regulatory guidelines.
    • Provides appropriate leadership for staff and promotes and environment in which staff can work cooperatively. Communicates appropriate departmental as well as hospital and health system information to staff through monthly department staff meetings, sharing of administration memos when appropriate, interoffice memos/communications, etc.
    • Maintains awareness of all employee performance problems and remains constructive, positive and effective in assisting the employee in resolving problems in the most effective manner, ensuring that the appropriate vs. inappropriate behaviors are explained and that expected standard of performance are communicated to the employee. Conducts performance evaluations of staff according to established procedures and within the appropriate time frame established per hospital policy.
    • Manages fiscal budget of assigned Nursing units to achieve adherence with stated goals and financial expectations. Monitors budget compliance, investigates and resolves any variances and approves staffing decisions to assure budget compliance.
    • Prepares short and long range planning recommendations for assigned areas including recommendations for new equipment, capital expenditures, and/or new services, ensuring that recommendations are thorough, timely, accurate, cost-effective and supportive of the goals, philosophies, policies and mission of the hospital.
    • Established accurate and effective systems for monitoring Nursing Services resources and services ensuring that established controls are reflective of the hospital's overall organization and approach.
    • Maintains personal and professional development through participating and presenting seminars and education programs, developing and participating in nursing studies and research and keeping current on issues, practices and trends in health care.
    • Performs other duties as assigned

    EDUCATION

    • Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
    • Master's Degree in Nursing Administration, Business Administration or related field preferred.

    LICENSING/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION:

    • Eligible for or currently licensed as a Nurse Practitioner in the State of Illinois.

    EXPERIENCE

    • At least 5 to 7 years health care experience.
    • Must have 5 years clinical staff nurse experience.
    • Must have at least 3 years management and/or supervisory experience.
