    Description

    Staten Island Academy is a PreK3 – grade 12 independent school seeking a full-time school counselor. The expected role of the school counselor is to make meaningful connections with students of all grades and provide support for their social and emotional development while encompassing the whole child perspective. The school counselor's role includes creating a safe and engaging environment for personal growth. An ability to collaborate with colleagues and parents/guardians to help implement and create plans for student success is a necessary skill. Another role within the community is to help educate about mental health issues and reduce stigmas around obtaining support.

    Responsibilities

    -Teach developmentally appropriate classes to grades PreK through 9 that support building skills that nurture confidence and self-awareness

    -Provide school wide individual or group counseling to help assist in learning healthy coping skills, decrease and manage stress, navigate personal challenges, or work on other identified social and emotional goals

    -Become a reliable and supportive resource for parents/guardians and colleagues to learn about child developmental and mental health issues

    -Make referrals for outside treatment or services when necessary and maintain communication with providers about the progress of the social and emotional well-being of the student

    -Participate in cyclical meetings to collaborate with heads of schools, learning specialists, teachers, deans, and advisors to help identify student needs, plan and coordinate support for students and the school community as a whole

    -Reports to the Director of Counseling Department

    Qualifications

    -Degree in Social Work, Mental Health Counseling, or School Counseling

    -Actively obtaining NYS Licensure or certification if applicable

    -Experience working with children
