    Care Services

    Shriners Children's Chicago offers specialized care for a wide range of pediatric orthopedic, bone, and joint conditions, including rare diseases and syndromes. Our specialties include spine and scoliosis care, plastic surgery, cleft lip and palate care, comprehensive rehabilitation, and spinal cord injuries.

    Job Description

    We have an opportunity for a PRN Cast Technician. The Cast Technician provides assistance to the medical staff in the application, maintenance, and removal of casts, traction, and other splint or motion devices as ordered.

    The successful candidate will have an understanding of anatomical structures and their relationships with one another, and be able to articulate descriptions of orthopaedic conditions.

    Maintaining the physical environment of cast rooms by ensuring they are clean and safe is also essential.

    Responsibilities

    The Cast Technician performs direct and indirect patient care activities within the scope of practice of an Orthopedic Technician and the Outpatient Clinic (OPC) standard of care.

    Evaluating patients scheduled in the cast clinic, noting the condition of the cast prior to removal and upon removal of the cast, inspecting the skin for signs of infection, redness, or breakdown, and reporting observations to the Charge Nurse or Provider are key responsibilities.

    Under the direction of the Provider, providing cast and skin care education to patients/families and participating in reviewing the content of patient informational handouts are also crucial.

    The incumbent must demonstrate competency in the application, removal, maintenance, modifications of cast, splints, and traction.

    Setting up and storing supplies and equipment, ensuring traction setups are correct and safe prior to casting procedures, and assisting team members with rooming patients are additional responsibilities.

    Qualifications

    A High School Diploma/GED, Basic Life Support (BLS), and National Board for Certification of Orthopaedic Technology or National Association of Orthopedic Technology certification are required.

    One year of related work experience in casting in orthopedic pediatrics is preferred.
