    MISSION & VISION STATEMENT:

    The Kewa Pueblo Health Corporation (KPHC) is established for the purposes of carrying out the vision and mission of the Santo Domingo Health Center (SDHC). The MISSION of KPHC is: "ENSURING HEALTH & WELLNESS THROUGH EXCELLENCE IN HEALTHCARE WITH RESPECT FOR CULTURE" and the VISION OF KPHC is: "HEALTHY PEOPLE, HEALTHY COMMUNITY, and HEALTHY LIFESTYLE".

    POSITION PURPOSE:

    Under direct supervision, the incumbent performs dispatch services and provides door-to-door patient transport which requires the driver/operation of transport vehicles capable of carrying passengers/patients and loads up to and including one (1) ton.

    PERFOMANCE EXPECTATIONS:

    In performance of their respective tasks and duties all employees of the Kewa Pueblo Health Center are expected to conform to the following:

    • Uphold all principles of confidentiality and patient care to the fullest extent.
    • Adhere to all professional and ethical behavior standards of the healthcare industry.
    • Interact in an honest, trustworthy and dependable manner with patients, employees and vendors.
    • Possess cultural awareness and sensitivity.
    • Maintain a current insurable driver's license.
    • Comply with all Kewa Pueblo Health Corporation and Santo Domingo Health Center policies and procedures, as well

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES, FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Receives and documents telephone requests from patients for door-to-door transport, as well as through-door service when necessary, and communicates requests to drivers using paging/cell phone equipment.
    • Operates such vehicles as pick-up trucks, vans, carryalls and sedans. Drives to and from designated locations on the basis of specific trip assignments or schedules to transport patients, personnel. Driver is responsible for the comfort and safe transport of patients and passengers, by avoiding rough terrain and hazardous roads and ground, insures that cargo is protected from weather, insuring proper load distribution and that it is secured to prevent damage or loss while in transit. Follows all safety rules, and other local, state, tribal and federal rules and regulation pertaining to a moving vehicle: driver shall escort patients from facility to the home and back home, as needed.
    • Operates patient transport vehicles to pick up and transport patients under non-emergency conditions from one location to another such as from their home to the Kewa Pueblo Health Center or between health care facilities.
    • Operates the vehicle at controlled speeds to insure patient's comfort. The driver will use KPHC issued cell phones for communication with KPHC Facility and with Transportation dispatch.
    • Follows all safety rules and other local state and Federal rules and regulations, including Tribal regulations, regarding operating a motor vehicle.
    • Performs preventive maintenance services or take in vehicles for repairs and washes transport vehicles. Checks vehicle for damage or pilferage; checks instrument panels for correct operation, correct tire pressure, correct fluid levels, checks for oil, fuel, and water leaks, and insures the presence of safety devices and tools in vehicles. Refuels vehicle after each transport or run, replenishes oil when necessary, and changes or assists when repair services are not available. Examines vehicle and equipment by visual means prior to and after each use or during operation to identify any malfunction. Reports all malfunctions to supervisor. Cleans and disinfects patient vehicles after each trip, and restocks supplies.
    • Completes on a daily basis the following: maintenance checklist; sign-out sheet and overtime sheet when necessary, credit care invoices, accident report form, roadside repair form, and preventive maintenance log book.
    • Coordinates with the tribal EMS program, as well as the tribal CHR program, as needed.
    • Perform all other related duties as assigned.

    MINIMUM MANDATORY QUALIFICATIONS:

    Education:

    • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

    Experience:

    • 21 years of age with one (1) year experience as a driver, transporting persons to a medical facility or other public use facility.

    Mandatory Knowledge, Skills, Abilities or Other Qualifications:

    • Must hold a current and valid New Mexico Driver's License, Class D, with no more than one (1) moving violation and/or accident within the last five (5) years.
    • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office programs necessary for day-to-day functions.
    • Incumbent is required to know the basic First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) techniques and be familiar with the medical equipment in the vehicle to quickly locate such equipment for attending medical personnel and to know how to properly load and secure patients in the vehicle.
    • Ability to read and write; ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions; ability to understand and navigate maps.
    • Ability to effectively communicate using company issued cell phone devices to report drop-offs, estimated times of arrivals to locations, and other related communications necessary to perform job responsibilities.
    • Incumbent must have the basic skills to manipulate controls for starting, stopping, backing up and driving the vehicle in all types of traffic and road conditions. Possess skill in maneuvering the vehicle to avoid jousting the patient(s) or passenger(s).
    • Knowledge of the height, width, length, and weight of the vehicle in order to judge overhead and side clearances, knowledge of the turning radius, braking distance, and the safest distance to be maintained from other vehicles.
    • Knowledge of defensive driving techniques, including skills to recognize developing hazardous road and traffic conditions and judgment in selecting alternate routes to avoid potential problems, adjusting driving methods to the practices of the surrounding traffic in order to avoid accidents, damage to cargo, and safe transports of patient(s) or passenger(s), are all required.
    • Possess the skills and knowledge to load cargo into the vehicle, using appropriate tie-downs such as straps, rope, and binders for transit on public roads at highway speeds or under similar circumstances. Possess the knowledge to recognize potential maintenance problems when conducting an operator's inspection of vehicles, and reporting technical problems to the supervisor.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Experience in non-emergent patient transport.
    • Current ALS and BLS certification.
    • Bilingual skills in English and the Keres native language.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT:

    The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the primary functions of this job. Normal office conditions exist, and the noise level in the work environment can vary from low to moderate. This position may be exposed to certain health risks that are inherent when working within a health center facility.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

    The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the primary functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to frequently stand, walk, sit, bend, twist, talk and hear. There may be prolonged periods of sitting, keyboarding, reading, as well as driving or riding in transport vehicles. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include reading, distance, computer, and color vision. Talking and hearing are essential to communicate with patients, vendors and staff.

    MENTAL DEMANDS:

    There are a number of deadlines associated with this position. The employee must also multi-task and interact with a wider variety of people on various and, at times, complicated issues.
