Job Description:

The Atmospheric Sciences Research Center at SUNY Albany seeks a post-doctoral scholar to join a research project on deep learning-based wind gust forecasting.

Primary Responsibilities:

40% of time: Developing novel deep learning-based models of wind gusts
30% of time: Analyzing a diverse suite of observational datasets (e.g., New York State Mesonet, Nextrad)
10% of time: Contribute to operationalize model execution for selected cities and explore applications
10% of time: Presenting research results at various meetings, conferences, and workshops
10% of time: Publishing in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals

Additional Responsibilities:

Weekly meetings, note taking and participation in various research related activities designated by PI.

Reporting Relationships:

The postdoctoral researcher will report results to the principal investigator (PI; Dr. Sukanta Basu) at weekly group meetings and during scheduled seminars and colloquia. It is expected that the postdoctoral researcher will write up and publish their results in high impact peer-reviewed publications on machine learning, in coordination with the PI.

Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

PhD in a relevant field (Atmospheric Sciences, Meteorology Engineering, or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
An in-depth understanding of deep learning models (e.g., vision transformer, graph neural network) is desired.
Some understanding of mesoscale modeling is ideal.
Proficiency in various machine learning frameworks (e.g., Keras, Tensorflow, PyTorch).
Excellent programming skills in various platforms and languages.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
