    Job Title: Director, Design Engineering

    FLSA Status: Exempt

    Department: Engineering

    Reports to: Vice President, Engineering & R&D

    GENERAL DESCRIPTION / PURPOSE:

    The Director, Design Engineering is responsible for directing the Engineering team of approximately 44 direct and indirect employees to successfully meet engineering/project management/manufacturing objectives of on-time and on-budget product deliveries.

    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

    Functional and Technical Skills
    • Responsible for the long-term development of design department staff by providing engineers with the tools and resources necessary to obtain the appropriate education and experience to enhance their development.
    • Responsible for staffing engineering teams with the appropriate skills for projects to succeed in an engineering management defined timeline.
    • Responsible for providing the appropriate tools for staff to succeed at the given engineering tasks.
    • Responsible for defining engineering processes that increase engineering/manufacturing's throughput.
    • Develop and ensure standardization and best practices for electrical design methods and documentation. Manage to ensure that Electrical, Mechanical, Controls and Fluid Power team achieve objectives and project completion within specified budget and time frame.
    • Ensure that product systems are designed per specification while meeting company quality standards and customer expectations.
    • Monitor and adjust individual performance of staff based on KPI performance expectations related to design quality, on time releases, and project task hours.
    • Promote environment of continuous improvement of Electrical, Mechanical, Controls and Fluid Power production engineering processes and documentation by using Six Sigma techniques to increase throughput, design efficiencies, and product quality.
    Leadership and Talent Development
    • Develop team members and ensure effective succession planning for all pivotal positions within the team.
    • Develop a staff with the appropriate mixture of experience, capabilities, and skills to consistently meet company goals and departmental initiatives in the most cost-effective manner. Actively advocate for appropriate academic and leadership training and development at all levels within your team.
    • Responsible for Electrical, Mechanical, Controls and Fluid Power personnel resource planning and assignments to meet production design schedules; resources to support R&D and Product Support Group in order to meet group goals and commitments.
    Financial Management
    • Responsible for managing your teams' annual budget. Understand the financial impacts of various projects on the business and act accordingly to maximize returns.

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    Education: BS in Engineering or technical related field

    Experience: 10+ years' experience in Engineering, with a focus on project engineering.

    Licenses/Certifications: Obtain and maintain Railroad Certifications

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
    • Knowledge of or ability to quickly become familiar with Railroad products and services, particularly pertaining to maintenance of track and structures.
    • Ability to effectively lead a large team.
    • Knowledge of computers and software with good word processing skills using Microsoft applications and ERP systems.
    • A disciplined work ethic and advocate for Loram's management's mission and vision.
    *14+ years combination of education and experience in engineering with a focus on project engineering.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    Education: Master's degree in Engineering or related field in heavy equipment industry
