    This is a part-time or temporary non-benefited position.

    Description & Details:

    The cheer team coach is responsible for all aspects of the cheer team as well as being committed to the athletics department expectations for its sports teams. The cheer team coach instructs, mentors and recruits the team members. This individual is responsible for coaching student-athletes in cheerleading techniques to prepare them for NDSU athletics contests. The cheer team coach is responsible for scheduling and conducting practice times that do not conflict with class and supervising the team at games, camps/clinics and any other activity where the team cheers.

    Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Coaches and instructs cheerleaders/mascots, individually or in groups, regarding the rules, regulations, equipment and techniques of the sport.
  • Assesses skills and assigns team positions.
  • Observes cheerleaders/mascot, during events and practice to determine the needs for individual or team improvement.
  • Develops a regular practice schedule and organizes practice time to provide both individual and team development.
  • Maintains a physically safe practice environment.
  • Schedules facilities for practices with Assistant Director of Facilities and Operations in Athletics and with campus entities, as needed.
  • Supervises cheerleaders/mascot during practices and games. This will include occasional travel for football games, playoffs and select conference and NCAA championships.
  • Follows established procedures in the event of an injury.
  • Follows state, regional and district regulations governing the program.
  • Evaluates, recruits and retains students to the cheer team.
  • Holds organizational meetings for team prospects and encourages students to participate.
  • Conducts team tryouts annually; develops tryout criteria and packet.
  • Schedules dates for summer camps, clinics and/or practices.
  • Supervises and directs any assistant coaches.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of behavior and provides proper supervision. (Athletics Code of Conduct applies)
  • Monitors the academic performance of team members to ensure student success.
  • Acts as a team representative and promotes cheerleading by communicating with various athletics department areas (e.g., Athletics Communications, Marketing, Equipment, Supervisor).
  • Promotes a spirit of cooperation between the cheerleaders and the dance team.
  • Follows established procedures for supplies and uniforms; maintains equipment inventory with assistance of NDSU Athletics equipment staff.
  • Maintains cheer team budget.
  • Coordinates campus and community appearance for the cheer team and mascot.
  • Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.
  • Follows rules established for participation at NCAA and conference championships.
    Occasional Duties:
  • Attends clinics and other professional activities to improve coaching performance.
  • Performs any other related duties as assigned by supervisor (TBD).
  • Other duties as assigned.
    Advertised Pay:
  • Approximately $20/hour, $19,000 annually
    Minimum Qualifications:
  • Experience as a cheerleader.
  • Effective coaching techniques and skills related to cheers, stunting and choreography.
  • Thorough knowledge of the rules, regulations, strategies and techniques of the sport.
  • The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor, the athletics department and campus community
  • Has current CPR and first aid certification.
    Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience as a cheer team coach at the high school or college level preferred
    General Expectations of Position:

    Regular and predictable attendance on the job is an essential function of the position. Maintain regular and timely schedule, including evening and weekend activities, as necessary to fulfill duties and responsibilities. Conduct is expected to be professional and courteous. Instructions and assignments are to be carried out in a manner which promotes and is consistent with the intrinsic goals of NDSU.
