    Job Summary:


    The OSU Chief of Police serves as the senior law enforcement officer responsible for overseeing all aspects of campus safety and security at OSU Stillwater, OSU Tulsa, and the Emergency Operation Center.

    The Chief of Police provides strategic leadership, direction, and coordination of the Campus Police Department to ensure the safety and well-being of students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

    This position plays a critical role in maintaining a safe and secure environment conducive to learning, research, and community engagement.

    While a routine work schedule is 8 a.m.

    to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, the Chief of Police serves as the first point of contact on a 24/7 basis for critical and emergency situations.

    This requires additional hours outside of the regular work schedule. In addition, weekend and evening hours are required at special athletic events.

    Law enforcement, by its nature, exposes officers to physical dangers. As a police officer, this individual may have to face deadly force. The Chief of Police is a take-charge position in bomb threats or environmental hazardous spills and dangers.

    The Chief of Police must have the entire sensory perception to handle activities generally expected of law enforcement.

    This position must possess the physical capabilities and psychomotor skills, to perform the following tasks:
    operating equipment such as firearms, alternative weapons, defensive tactics, cameras, vehicles, computers, etc. Engage in physically combative confrontations with resistant and possibly violent individuals to subdue them. Use restraining/control holds and use hands/feet for self-defense. Be proficient with and fire a qualifying score with the department-issued firearm on the day and nighttime courses. Lift, pull, or carry objects and people (up to 200 lbs.).

    Sit, stand, walk, climb, kneel, crouch, bend, reach, crawl, jump, and dodge obstacles, and run short and moderate distances in foot pursuit.

    Manually direct traffic by reaching both arms and hands.

    Position Qualifications:
    Minimum Qualifications:

    Bachelor's degree and five years of police experience at command level.

    Police Officer certification at advanced level.


    The Chief of Police must:
    Maintain the standards identified in the Law Enforcement Code of Ethics.
    Meet State standards in using vehicles, firearms, and other weapons and equipment. Capable of taking comments on critical incidents and making decisions that results in a safe, legal, and satisfactory outcome.

    Have initiative, independence, and ability to identify and resolve issues and communicate the Department's vision and values within the organization and the community.

    Maintain confidentiality of information and protocols.

    Resolve situations by making appropriate decisions in highly stressful, rapidly deteriorating, and violent situations.

    Prioritize work, perform multiple tasks, coordinate with other law enforcement agencies, service agencies, departments, and cope with completing and changing priorities.

    Speak effectively in public.

    Have sensory perception to handle activities generally expected of law enforcement.
    The Chief can have minor deficiencies in sensory perception (sight, hearing) that can be corrected to functional levels.

    Possess the physical capabilities and psychomotor skills, to be able to perform the following tasks:Possess and maintain CLEET Police Officer certification.

    Operate equipment such as firearms, alternative weapons, defensive tactics, cameras, vehicles, computers, etc. Engage in physically combative confrontations with resistant and possibly violent individuals to subdue them. Use restraining/control holds and use hands/feet for self-defense. Be proficient with and fire a qualifying score with the department-issued firearm on the day and nighttime courses. Lift, pull, or carry objects and people (up to 200 lbs.).

    Capable of working intelligently while providing excellent leadership in critical incidents and emergencies, over extended periods through rest or sleep deprivation.
