    Cleveland Clinic background
    Description

    Women's and Children's Float Pool:

The Women's and Children's Float Pool is a position that provides nursing an array of experiences to meet the needs of multiple families in our service line.

This group on nurses care for patients in the Mother Baby, Neonatal Intensive Care, and Pediatric Units.

The Mother Baby Unit is a 35-bed unit where mothers recover and learn to care for their newborn baby.

The Float Pool nursing responsibility is the care of the couplet dyad (mother and baby) and prepare them with education to care for themselves and their baby upon discharge home.

Our Mother Baby unit has achieved Baby Friendly status and cares for more than 5,000 new families a year.

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is a 34-bed level III unit caring for premature and term babies from 22-weeks' gestation and above.

The float pool nursing responsibilities include providing care including non-invasive respiratory support and IV drips, along with tube feedings to transition to bottle feeding.

This is a great experience for nurses who want to care for a NICU patient that is stable and preparing for feeding and heading towards discharge home.

Our NICU was awarded the Ohio Patient Safety Award for the care of patients on Bubble CPAP and the Nathan Hurle Continuous Improvement Award, and the Float Pool nurses are integral in helping the unit achieve this award.

The Pediatric Unit is a 24-bed unit where medical and surgical pediatric patients come for care.

The most common surgical patients include appendectomies and tonsillectomies while our Pediatric Unit utilizes care pathways for asthma and other respiratory illnesses, as well as common gastrointestinal illnesses.

The Float Pool nurse is responsible for the care including nasal cannula and IV drips. The Pediatric Unit includes Child Life Specialists in their care team to assist with patient support.

Each unit includes onsite Nurse Practitioners, Physicians, and Respiratory Therapists 24 hours a day to support the bedside nurses and patients.

Other services such as nutrition and PT, OT, and speech therapies are provided daily.

Our Mother Baby, NICU, and Pediatric units work closely together to ensure nursing support for the patients and families as well as projects that benefit the whole Women's and Children's Service Line.

The Women's and Children's Float Pool nurse is a rewarding role that benefits so many patients and families while building skills in several specialties.
