    Description

    The following list comprises expectations of candidates for CRNP internship at COMHAR. While this list is not exhaustive, it provides a framework for your experience as an intern.

    Depending upon your academic As a psychiatric NP intern, you will learn and be expected to:


    • Apply knowledge associated with advanced pharmacology and physical assessment
    • Complete a psychiatric evaluation for patients 18 and older. In some instances, you may be exposed to younger patients depending on the availability of a child psychiatrist or CRNP specializing in children.
    • Clearly identify psychiatric diagnoses after completing a psychiatric evaluation or assessment.
    • Summarize assessment data in order to formulate a plan of treatment
    • Prescribe requisite therapy as a direct outcome of the summarized assessment
    • Apply advanced psychopharmaceutical knowledge in medication categories such as first and generation antipsychotics and antidepressants, controlled substances, ADHD, etc.
    • Be familiar with the mechanisms of action of these medications, associated side effects, the need for lab assays, etc.
    • Clearly explain to our patients the desired effects and side effects of medications in a way patients can comprehend.
    • Ascertain when to order labs considering organs that may be affected by certain medications (e.g., ordering a TSH, CMP and lithium level on a patient prescribed lithium).
    • Interpret laboratory values and explain these to the patient.
    • Write prescriptions for medications and various diagnostic assays
    • Assess and determine the interaction between physical and mental health and plan accordingly
    • Be able to conduct an evaluation/medication assessment in the allotted 30 minutes time slot.
    • Learn how to treat patients diagnosed with substance use disorder with MAT.
    • Identify learning needs and ask cogent questions
    • Therapeutically interact with a variety of clients
    • Document assessment, plan and treatment accurately in the electronic health record
    • Conduct your preceptorship within the boundaries of COMHAR's policies and procedures
