The City of Pismo Beach has a rare and exciting opportunity for a skilled and motivated Fleet Mechanic to oversee and operate the City's Motor Vehicle Repair (MVR) Shop.
This position may be filled at either the Fleet Mechanic I (entry-level) or Fleet Mechanic II (journey-level) depending on qualifications.
In this dynamic, hands-on role, you'll perform preventive maintenance, diagnostics, fabrication, and repairs on a diverse and ever-evolving fleet of light and heavy-duty equipment. The MVR Shop services police vehicles, fire engines, utility trucks, electric vehicles, chemical sprayers, water system pumps, and specialized public works equipment. The shop also functions as the City's primary fabrication facility, supporting fleet repairs and a wide range of other City projects.
As Fleet Mechanic, You Will
- Keep the City's fleet compliant with CARB regulations and California DOT BIT program requirements.
- Oversee the operations of the MVR Shop.
- Assist departments with vehicle specifications and fleet purchases.
- Facilitate the auctioning of surplus vehicles and equipment.
- Manage the fleet budget, invoicing, and administrative functions related to the fleet program.
This position plays a vital role in supporting public safety and essential City services. You may be required to respond after hours, weekends, and holidays for emergency vehicle repairs.

Fleet Mechanic I:
$53,768 - $65,353
This is the entry-level class that performs preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, service, and repair activities on a wide range of light to heavy City vehicles, police and fire vehicles and equipment, and public works construction and maintenance equipment required to ensure that all vehicles and equipment are maintained in a safe and effective working condition and provide the highest level of safety for City use. Responsibilities include inspecting and attending to assigned areas in a timely manner and performing a wide variety of tasks in the maintenance and repair of assigned vehicles and equipment. Positions at this level usually perform most of the duties required of the positions at the Fleet Mechanic II level but are not expected to function at the same skill level and exercise less independent discretion and judgment in matters related to work procedures and methods.
Fleet Mechanic II:
$68,827 - $83,657
This is a full journey-level class that performs the full range of preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, service, and repair activities on a wide range of light to heavy City vehicles, police and fire vehicles and equipment, and public works construction and maintenance equipment required to ensure that all vehicles and equipment are maintained in a safe and effective working condition and provide the highest level of safety for City use. Responsibilities include inspecting and attending to assigned areas in a timely manner and performing a wide variety of tasks in the maintenance and repair of assigned vehicles and equipment. Incumbents are expected to work independently and exercise judgment and initiative. This class is distinguished from the Fleet Mechanic I by the performance of more highly skilled and complex mechanical repair work requiring a greater level of experience, knowledge, and skill.
Under general supervision, performs semi-skilled to skilled mechanical maintenance and repair work related to City vehicles and equipment. Performs preventative and safety maintenance on police, fire, and public works vehicles and equipment. Performs welding and fabrication work as necessary.

- Performs preventative maintenance such as oil changes, tune-ups, lubes, tire rotations, engine and radiator flushes, and filter replacements on City vehicles and equipment.
- Inspects, diagnoses, and locates mechanical difficulties on City automobiles, trucks, and a variety of diesel and gasoline powered equipment; repairs light to heavy police and fire vehicles and equipment and public works construction and maintenance equipment; performs both preventative and corrective repairs.
- Overhauls, repairs, and adjusts engines, transmissions, differentials, and clutches; tunes up engines, diagnoses fuel injection problems, replaces ignition parts, and cleans and adjusts carburetors; diagnoses mechanical, gas, or diesel fuel systems.
- Replaces or repairs faulty parts; diagnoses and repairs wheel bearings, clutches, oil seals, shock absorbers, exhaust systems, steering mechanisms, and related parts and equipment on City vehicles and off-road equipment.
- Inspects, diagnoses, and locates mechanical difficulties on dump trucks and construction equipment.
- Ensures that all vehicles and equipment are in safe and operational condition; makes road emergency vehicle and equipment repairs to all City-owned rolling stock.
- Provides technical information for equipment and vehicle bid specifications; provides bid specifications for tools and equipment.
- Inputs and approves invoices, creates purchase orders, tracks fuel bids, and monitors vendor communications; supports budget development, insurance uploads and management, and fleet tracking.
- Tests and repairs starters, alternators, and generators; recharges or replaces batteries; diagnoses and makes minor repairs on air conditioning systems and equipment.
- Develops and directs a regular inspection schedule of equipment and machinery; troubleshoots electrical and mechanical problems in vehicles and equipment.
- Performs electric and oxy-acetylene welding in the fabricating and repair of equipment, structures, tools, and other related parts; designs, lays out, and fabricates equipment parts; rebuilds broken equipment and parts as necessary.
- Reads and interprets technical manuals and blueprints to facilitate installation, servicing, repair, and replacement services and activities.
- Observes safe work methods and makes appropriate use of related safety equipment as required.
- Maintains public facilities, shop and garage areas, storage sites, and other work areas in a clean and orderly condition; secures equipment and tools at the close of the workday.
- Maintains accurate manual and computerized logs and records of work performed and materials and equipment used; prepares reports as required.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge of:

Ability To

- Operate a variety of automotive, truck, and heavy equipment and testing equipment in a safe and effective manner.

- Maintain accurate logs, records, and basic written records of work performed.

Qualifications
Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
High School Diploma or GED required for all levels.
Fleet Mechanic I: One (1) year of experience and/or training in the repair and maintenance of gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles and associated equipment.
Fleet Mechanic II: Four (4) years of increasingly responsible experience in the repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment, or two (2) years of experience equivalent to a Fleet Mechanic I at the City of Pismo Beach. Some experience in budget development and program management is desirable.
Licenses and Certifications
Fleet Mechanic I
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California Driver's License by time of appointment.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, a class A driver's license with the appropriate endorsements, within twelve (12) months of appointment to the position.
Fleet Mechanic II
- Possession of a valid Class A California Driver's License with appropriate endorsements by time of appointment.
