    Overview

    The Job in a Nutshell:
    The Natural Grocers Director of Scientific Affairs and Nutrition Education (DSCANE) position is an advancement and leadership position.

    The DSCANE acts as the direct supervisor for the Nutrition Communication & Education Manager and the Nutrition & Quality Standards Manager positions within the Nutrition Education Department (NED).

    The DSCANE position is fundamental for providing ongoing support and evidence-based nutrition education/training to Nutritional Health Coaches (NHCs), store employees, customers, and the community.

    In addition, the DSCANE provides Natural Grocers NHCs with a professional resource for nutrition information while promoting the importance of diet, supplements, movement, ecologically thoughtful practices for human health and wellbeing.

    The DSCANE acts as an educational link for Natural Grocers employees to keep them informed about nutrition, company standards and the quality of our store products.

    The DSCANE position plays an integral role in helping Natural Grocers improve the health and wellbeing of our communities.

    As a front-line contributor to the Natural Grocers mission, this role requires a passionate, outgoing individual with enthusiasm for nutrition education.

    Responsibilities

    Responsible for the development of nutrition education training materials for the company including the NHC position materials, store Crew resources and customer resources.

    a. Develops, coordinates, and delegates development of materials as necessary to meet deadlines. b.

    Nutrition education training materials consists of the following, but is not limited to this list:
    i. Coaching Documents ii. Customer Literature Files iii. Customer Nutrition Education Classes iv. Crew Nutrition Education Classes v. Nutrient to Know About (NTKA) 1. Research Bomb 2. Crew and Customer Facing Classes 3. Marketing Materials 4. good4u Crew quarterly NTKA Health Challenges vi. Foundational Five program materials vii. Health Supportive Statements Office Hours Study viii. Website Content ix. Things We Won't Carry and Why explanations x. Public Facing and Crew Facing Videos on Standards xi. Health Hotline Editorial xii. Political Advocacy Documents xiii. LMS trainings
    Manages the Natural Grocers Crew Nutrition-Education Training Program, the NHC Continuing Education Program, and Customer Nutrition Education Resources a.

    The Crew Nutrition Education Program consists of the following, but is not limited to this list:
    i. Nutrition education content for the monthly good4u Crew meetings ii. LMS trainings iii. Health Supportive Statement training for the Marketing Department iv. Introduction to Dietary Supplements Curriculum v. Crew Wellness Program vi. Foundational Five Supplements education program b.

    The NHC Continuing Education Program consists of, but is not limited to this list:
    i. Nutrition Education content presented during monthly NHC meetings ii. Health Supportive Statements study review for Office Hours training iii. Coaching Documents iv. Customer Literature Files (CLFs) v. Customer Nutrition Education Classes vi. Recipe Demo Classes vii. Foundational Five Supplements education program c.

    The Customer Nutrition Education Resources consists of the following, but is not limited to this list:
    i. CLFs ii. Website and app content iii. Health hotline editorial iv. Foundational Five Supplements education program v. Social Media nutrition and health content vi. Nutrient to Know About (NTKA) vii. ESG materials
    Manages the Nutrition Communications & Education Manager (NCEM) and the Nutrition & Quality Standards Manager positions (NQSM) positions a. Coordinate and prioritizes tasks and projects to meet deadlines b.

    Trains these positions as needed on the following, but is not limited to this list:
    i.

    Producing content for and conducting the nutrition education content presented at the monthly NHC Meeting and Store Support Center (SSC) good4u Crew trainings ii.

    Conducting media interviews and investor store tours iii. Other trainings as needed c. Coordinates the study review and other tasks associated with it for Health Supportive Statements Office Hours Training d. Conducts performance evaluations in collaboration with the Director of Nutrition Education.
    Presents and coordinates nutrition education content for NHCs and Crew a. Develops an annual presentation schedule for the NCEM and NQSM positions

    Coordinates the review of floor safe language for Customer Nutrition Education Resources developed by Marketing, Purchasing, copywriters, and other departments.

    a. Coordinates with the NCEM to provide requested information to Marketing, Purchasing, copywriters, and other departments as needed b. Coordinates the review of customer nutrition education facing materials produced by other departments and provides input for determining language, phrasing and accuracy as needed
    Conduct and coordinate special event outreach presentations, media Interviews, investor or business analyst store tours as needed
    Quality control and standards development a. Is part of the Quality Control and Standards Development Team i. Attends meetings ii. Provides research on ingredients as requested b. Coordinates with the NQSM position and other NED personnel to support the development of company quality standard c.

    Ensures that the NQSM position balances their time between supporting the development of company quality standards and supports the Nutrition Education Department function and nutrition educational content needs.

    Books a.

    Coordinates the review of new books and provides input to the committee for adding and removing books for sale in the stores b.

    Approves books put on quarterly sales
    Advocacy a.

    Provides support on company campaigns to ensure continued access to dietary supplements, maintaining the integrity of national organic standards and other food standards, scope of practice for NHCs and other issues as needed b.

    Serve as a resource for commenting on proposed government regulations, national organic standards and other nutrition related topics as needed

    Although this is a general outline of job responsibilities all employees are expected to be "hands on" and do whatever it takes to get the job done and make the department and the company thrive.

    Qualifications

    Recipe for Success:
    A master's degree in nutrition or a related field (e.g., dietetics, biology, biochemistry, naturopathy).
    Experience in the Nutrition Health Coach (NHC), NHC Regional Manager, and/or another NED Manager position.
    Excellent organizational skills with strong attention to detail
    Impeccable follow-up and follow-through skills to meet company deadlines
    Has the ability to act independently and autonomously with little supervision
    Has the ability to prioritize multiple tasks requiring deadlines
    Works well with interruptions and changing deadlines
    Must be self-motivated with a high degree of personal integrity and professionalism
    Tolerates prolonged viewing of a computer screen
    Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint

    If the degree and/or certification requires continuing education to maintain the degree and/or certification, then those requirements must be fulfilled.

    If the degree and/or certification do not require CEC, maintaining 16 Continuing Education (CE) Hours (or two CE units) per year is required.
