    JOB SUMMARY


    The Registered Nurse-Acute functions as a vital member of the healthcare team by demonstrating a customer/patient focus, effective communication, professionalism self-development, and teamwork.

    The individual utilizes the nursing process to assess, plan, implement and evaluate comprehensive care provided to selected patient populations and their families.

    The Registered Nurse-Hospital is expected to demonstrate excellent clinical, problem-solving, interpersonal and leadership skills and make decisions consistent with hospital policies, department protocols/guidelines, and the Wisconsin Nurse Practice Act.


    WORK SHIFT
    12 hour night shift, variable days to include every third weekend and a holiday rotation.


    JOB QUALIFICATIONS

    EDUCATION


    For positions requiring education beyond a high school diploma or equivalent, educational qualifications must be from an institution whose accreditation is recognized by the Council for Higher Education and Accreditation.


    Minimum Required:
    Diploma or degree in nursing.


    Preferred/Optional:
    Bachelor's degree in nursing.


    EXPERIENCE

    Minimum Required:
    None


    Preferred/Optional:
    Two years' hospital nursing experience.


    Those inpatient facilities participating in the Clinical Nurse Advancement Portfolio (CNAP) clinical ladder, refer to program documents for eligibility to advance/maintain CNAP level.

    CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES

    The following licensure(s), certification(s), registration(s), etc., are required for this position. Licenses with restrictions are subject to review to determine if restrictions are substantially related to the position.


    Minimum Required:

    • Current State of Wisconsin Registered Nurse License or Nurse Compact License.
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification awarded by the American Heart Association (AHA) within three months of employment.
    • Additional department-specific certifications, licenses, or memberships may be required (varies by department/location).

    Preferred/Optional:
    Basic Life Support (BLS) certification awarded by the American Heart Association (AHA) at time of hire.

    6 North- Acute Medical

    Registered Nurse-Hospital

    DEPARTMENT/UNIT DESCRIPTION

    6 North is a 28-bed, private room, patient care unit within the department of Adult Medical Services. The unit provides inpatient-nursing care to patients utilizing a Synergy Model of Care. Patient can be admitted with a variety of medical related diagnoses.


    Services Provided/Patient Conditions:

    These patients include but are not limited to:

    • Chest Pain and other stable cardiac issues: Congestive Heart Failure, Hypertension, Atrial fibrillation
    • Myocardial Infarction
    • Pulmonary Emboli/Deep Vein Thrombosis
    • Renal: Dialysis
    • Gastro-Intestinal Non-surgical: Abdominal pain, Nausea/Vomiting, Gastrointestinal bleeding
    • Respiratory/Pulmonary: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Pneumonia, Dyspnea
    • Neuro/Stroke: Mental status changes, Weakness, Dementia
    • Wounds
    • Sepsis
    • Cystic Fibrosis
    • Diabetes
    • Pain Management

    Staffing Mix:


    Patient care on 6 North is accomplished by 24/7 staffing through a combination of nursing personnel that include RN's, Nurse Techs and CNA's.

    Direct caregiver skill mix is determined each shift through established guidelines provided to the charge nurses by unit management through a shift management tool.

    Fluctuations in daily staffing models may vary from shift to shift or day to day due to acuity of patients and availability of staff.

    Additionally, therapy services are provided to patients through Physical, Occupational, and Respiratory Therapy services. Operational support is provided to the department from Health Unit Coordinators and Decentralized Transport.


    Patient Population:


    The patient population on 6 North is approximately 4% early adult years), 10% young adult years), 20% middle adult years) and 60% geriatric adult (>65 years).

    Cultural needs are considered for Native Americans, Hmong, Amish/Mennonite, and Hispanic patients who account 1% of our total patient population.

    Interpretative Services are available to nursing staff as needed.


    Frequent Procedures:
    6 North staff is dedicated to providing nursing care and education to their patients and families.

    Clinical procedures performed frequently on the unit include:

    • Antibiotic therapy
    • Blood product administration
    • Anticoagulation therapy
    • IV Drips: Heparin, Diltiazem, and Nitroglycerin
    • Management of venous access devices: PIV, Central Line,PICC lines, Hickman catheters
    • Chest Tube Management
    • Trach Management
    • Management of drains
    • Insertion and care of feeding tubes
    • Monitoring and management of oxygen therapy modalities
    • Wound/dressing care including wound vac's,
    • Complex pain management

    Equipment used:
    Department-specific equipment/skills most frequently seen on 6 North include:


    • Neuro Checks
    • O2 saturation monitor
    • IVAC - IV pumps
    • PCA pumps
    • Telemetry monitor
    • Tube feeding pumps
    • Sequential TEDS/foot pumps
    • Oxygen delivery equipment
    • Bladder scanner
    • EZ lift/stand
    • Ceiling/Hoyer lifts
    • Blood Glucose machines
    • Oxygen delivery equipment
    (including bipap/cpap)
