    About the Role:
    The role of the resident physician is focused on acquiring the necessary training to develop into a proficient physician. Throughout this training process, the resident will be responsible for managing patient care with oversight from attending physicians in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Performance evaluations will be conducted regularly following the evaluation guidelines. The resident is expected to meet MercyOne's performance standards and carry out all designated services and related responsibilities aligning with MercyOne's Mission, Vision, and Values.


    • Fulfill duties corresponding to each rotation as outlined by the rotation objectives and goals.
    • Engage in all educational conferences, lectures, grand rounds, as scheduled by the program director.
    • Adhere to the on-call schedule set by the program director.
    • Develop a personal learning plan to nurture ongoing professional advancement under the guidance of the teaching team.
    • Actively participate in the educational and scholarly initiatives of the program and, when necessary, take on the responsibility of teaching and supervising other residents and students.
    • Adhere to the policies and procedures of GMEC, department, MercyOne, and medical staff regulations, including complying with duty hour restrictions and accurately documenting hours in the New Innovations Software system.
    This involves observing safety protocols and maintaining safe work practices as per OSHA and Foundation guidelines.


    • Ensures a secure work environment and follows safe practices in alignment with OSHA and Foundation policies and training.

    Diagnosing and managing diseases, disorders, and injuries is a core aspect of the role.
    - Conducting and interpreting results of comprehensive problem-focused medical history and physical examinations.
    - Performing and analyzing relevant diagnostic tests.
    - Coming up with an accurate diagnosis or differential diagnosis.
    - Creating and executing a suitable medical or surgical treatment plan.


    • Evaluating and managing the patient's overall medical condition.
      - Conducting and interpreting detailed medical history and physical examinations (including pre-operative assessments).
      - Formulating an appropriate differential diagnosis for the patient's medical issues.
      - Identifying the necessity for additional diagnostic tests, when warranted.
    • Developing and implementing a proper management plan, including necessary therapies, consultations, referrals, and health education.
      Exercising professionalism, empathy, and ethical behavior in accordance with legal standards and regulations, including HIPAA laws.
      - Adhering to informed consent principles.
      - Recognizing and respecting ethical boundaries in interactions with patients and peers.
      - Demonstrating compassionate and professional qualities.
      - Showing the ability to devise a systematic and thorough treatment strategy while considering healthcare costs.
    • Effectively communicating and collaborating in a multidisciplinary environment.
      - Interacting orally and in writing with patients, colleagues, payors, and the public.
      - Maintaining accurate medical records.
    • Handling individuals and groups in various socioeconomic and healthcare contexts.
      - Showing understanding of patients' psychosocial and healthcare requirements across all life stages.
      - Displaying sensitivity to different cultural values and preferences when providing care to individuals from diverse backgrounds.
      - Demonstrating familiarity with public health concepts, health promotion, and disease prevention.
    • Understanding practice management in diverse healthcare delivery setups.
      - Exhibiting knowledge of utilization management and quality improvement.
      - Understanding healthcare reimbursement and insurance matters including liability, disability, and Worker's Compensation.
      - Recognizing medical-legal considerations related to healthcare delivery.
      - Demonstrating comprehension of common business practices.
    • Leveraging research, scholarly activities, and technology to enhance professional knowledge and clinical practice.
      - Reading, interpreting, and critically examining medical and scientific literature.
      - Collecting and interpreting data for formal medical and surgical studies.
      - Demonstrating information technology skills in learning, teaching, and clinical practice.
      - Participating in continuous educational pursuits.
    • Keeping precise clinical and activity records for the residency program.
      - Timely documentation of clinical logs in the Residency Resource system.

    • Providing age-appropriate care in line with the patients' needs on the assigned unit.
      Understanding and applying age-specific data.
      - Performing tasks and using equipment suitable for different age groups.
      - Collaborating and communicating with others respecting their age-specific requirements.
    • Adhering to safety, infection control, and colleague health guidelines and procedures.
      - Attending mandatory safety programs.
      - Consistently using necessary personal protective equipment.
      - Knowing and being able to execute departmental emergency protocols for various situations.
      - Reporting and addressing unsafe equipment/furniture promptly.
      - Seeking help when required to ensure the safety of all involved.
      - Upholding a safe work environment following secure practices.
