    JOB SUMMARY

    This position is a full-time 12-month appointment and will have a wide set of responsibilities covering the MCB Professional Science Master's (PSM) and Professional Master's (PM) programs. This position is MCB's interface between PSM/PM students, employers, and faculty. This will be a 3-year durational position with annual renewal, with the potential for multi-year contracts, dependent on program funding and performance.

    The MCB Department offers "professional" master's degrees specifically designed to prepare students for careers in the biotechnology sector, as well as other opportunities outside of academia. MCB offers three degree programs: Applied Genomics, Applied Microbial Systems Analysis, and Applied Biochemistry and Cell Biology. These programs go beyond traditional MS programs by offering a coherent set of courses that build on the scientific knowledge base and add complimentary courses in laboratory and problem-solving experiences, computer literacy, lab management, and communication skills.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Management of MCB PSM and PM graduate programs, including course scheduling, room and laboratory assignments, student registration, liaison for internships, and monitoring of student progress.
    • Assist with laboratory preparation for courses and modules including supply ordering, laboratory setup, etc.
    • Personnel management for MCB PSM and PM graduate programs, including hiring, payroll, supervision, and assessment of course instructors and course assistants.
    • Coordinate PSM student admissions process including managing/organizing applications, enrollment, and student orientation.
    • Instructional support for MCB PSM and PM graduate programs, including operational support, ensuring departmental and University compliance, participation in content discussions, and professional development and internship course instruction.
    • Financial management for MCB PSM and PM graduate programs, including determination of budgets and expenditures, estimates of semester and intersession tuition revenue return, and program contributions to cover cohort course costs.
    • Program outreach for MCB PSM and PM graduate programs, including promotion of programs and interface with the PSM national office. Develop marketing strategy and communication plans.
    • Student advising for MCB PSM and PM graduate programs, including admissions, guidance, and problem resolution.
    • Coordinate all aspects of professional development for the Ph.D. and traditional M.S. degrees within the Department of MCB. Coordinate and instruct professional development skills courses.
    • Policy development and long-term planning, including periodic assessment of MCB PSM and PM programs and contact with industry internship and employment providers.
    • Provide program information to students, faculty, administrators, and industry contacts. Assist in the development of professional development programs for the MCB PSM, Ph.D., and MS students.
    • Act as liaison to the PSM National office performing surveys for and providing program information. Manage program re-accreditation.
    • Help identify and cultivate industry partners. Manage internships and track job placements.
    • Maintain student and alumni database with employment information.
    • Other duties as required.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    • Bachelor's degree in a STEM field plus four to six years of related experience.
    • Superior organization and administrative skills.
    • Financial expertise including budget preparation/analysis/projections.
    • Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
    • Proven ability to interact with students, program directors, and employers.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • Masters in a STEM field, plus 4 years of experience.
    • Knowledge of CT-based STEM companies that could interact with the MCB PSM and PM programs.
    • Work experience in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry or teaching in a STEM field.
    • Experience using PeopleSoft, Hyperion, Kuali, Aurora Word Press, and Slate admissions software.

    APPOINTMENT TERMS

    This is a full-time, 3-year durational position with annual renewal and potential for multi-year contracts, dependent on funding and performance, and includes an excellent benefits package including medical and retirement, as well as employee tuition waivers at the University of Connecticut.
