- Conducting or assisting in the treatment and rehabilitation of patients.
- Performing initial basic assessment procedures, including standardized psychological testing, clinical interviewing, mental status examinations, substance abuse evaluations, and psychological and nursing assessments.
- Identifying mental health and nursing diagnoses and providing patient education.
- Observing, monitoring, recording, and reporting the patient's progress.
- Conducting or assisting in conducting group and individual counseling, therapeutic community, and other related milieu activities.
- Instituting precautionary measures to prevent patient injury or suicide.
- Assisting patients with nutritional, hygiene, and comfort measures.
- Obtaining and recording vital signs.
- Coordinating with other agencies regarding specified care, treatment, prevention, rehabilitation, and administrative functions.
- Contacting military and community agencies to obtain collateral information and explaining and interpreting mental health services to patients or others.
- Assisting in, or arranging patient referral to public, private, and military community agencies.
- Preparing and maintaining records and reports pertaining to specialty services.
- Assisting with care of individuals experiencing acute and post-traumatic stress reactions.
- Preparing and maintaining treatment records.
- Education: You need to have a certificate, which can be acquired through graduation from an accredited Psychiatric Technician Program.
- Experience: You must have at least one year of experience as a Psychiatric Technician after graduation.
- Life Support Certification: You should possess and maintain a current AHA or ARC BLS Healthcare Provider certification.
- Security: You must possess the ability to pass a Government background check/security clearance.

Minimum Qualifications:
Alternatively, you can complete an equivalent education or experience that meets the requirement of the American Association of Psychiatric Technicians.
You can also complete education and experience as a behavioral science specialist/technician in the United States military.
