    Job Description

    The Quality Specialist is accountable for ensuring the integrity of the product throughout the manufacturing process. The role provides technical support and leadership for the quality control technician team and develops and implements continuous improvement opportunities for laboratory equipment and practices. Focus on activities that maintain and improve the quality system for the lab.

    Responsibilities include:

    • Serving as an active member of the HACCP team, up to and including PCQI and team leader where appropriate, and implementing recommendations from the HACCP/Food Safety teams in the plant.
    • Performing verification activities supporting the Food Safety Management program and reporting on metrics demonstrating compliance with the Food Safety Management System (FSMS).
    • Communicating with the Quality and Food Safety Manager on the state of the department and providing details on all relevant quality/food safety related incidents.
    • Leading internal food safety, GMP, and SOP audits.
    • Maintaining the Microbial Control Program, conducting swabs, trending results, and implementing corrective actions and follow-up.
    • Interacting with the Plant Sanitarian to establish and maintain acceptable sanitation at the facility.
    • Establishing and implementing programs and policies that support FSMS.
    • Performing activities related to FSMS goals at the facility.
    • Providing feedback to Department Superintendents on FSMS progress and activities in the department.
    • Managing corrective actions in the APeCS tracking database.
    • Providing support for all third-party auditing, including GFSI, Regulatory, and Customer visits.
    • Performing job cycle checks on food safety-related activities and proposing corrective actions for deviations.
    • Working with Operations to ensure that scales are calibrated/certified and functioning within limits.
    • Managing metal detection, magnet, and sifter programs for the facility and ensuring compliance with all program requirements.
    • Controlling and disposing of non-conforming product; ensuring positive release procedures are applied.
    • Responsible for ordering lab supplies and managing inventory.
    • Assisting with training and developing laboratory technicians in all aspects of process control and finished product testing.

    Requirements:

    • Preferred 4-year degree or equivalent 5 years Quality and Food Safety experience in a Food Manufacturing environment.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills required. Ability to communicate and interact with all levels of the organization, including senior management, customers, and regulatory officials, as needed.
    • Employees in this position may or may not be exposed to various potential chemical and food allergens due to the nature of our business and the requirements of the job.
