    Work Details:


    New function area Develop and lead a cohesive, sustainable bioinformatics training program for intramural researchers at NICHD, working closely with the Office of Education (OE) and the Bioinformatics and Scientific Programming Core (BSPC).

    Lead bioinformatics scientific workshops or symposia to support ongoing training goals.

    Collaborates with management and prepares reports to keep them updated on new and ongoing programs and activities.
    Contribute to the writing and development of executive summaries and reports to share with key partners.

    On behalf of Bioinformatics Training, prepare the Institute's annual report on program activities; use scientific expertise in health research to identify common themes and cross-cutting science areas.

    Meet with supervisory management on a regular basis to provide oral reports on the status of on-going projects and to receive new assignments.

    Collaborate with supervisory management on contract management activities associated with the program.

    Regularly assess the bioinformatics and data science training needs of the intramural program (with OE).
    Learn and stay up to date on cutting edge bioinformatics tools, algorithms, software, assays, programming languages, and methodology (with BSPC)

    Based on assessment of training needs, develop short courses on relevant material at the appropriate level, taking advantage of existing content where possible and creating new content (with BSPC) when needed.

    Organize, coordinate, (with OE) and teach (with BSPC) courses and workshops using best-practices pedagogical methods (for example from The Carpentries).

    Courses and workshops may include but are not limited to the following:

    basic, intermediate, and advanced R and Python programming and Bash shell scripting; bulk RNA-seq analysis; scRNA-seq analysis, ChIP-seq analysis, tooling such as RMarkdown, Jupyter notebooks, git, GitHub, Snakemake, Slurm; and/or concepts such as alignment, clustering, linear modeling, experimental design, visualization.

    Develop and assist in managing a system for getting feedback from learners, including both immediate as well as longitudinal feedback, and incorporate into future courses.

    Coordinate with other bioinformatics and data science trainers at NIH to identify shared challenges and solutions.
    Grow and maintain a community of learners, providing support throughout their NICHD career and ideally beyond.
    Facilitate troubleshooting and technical support among learners to encourage cohorts to help each other and nurture long-term sustainability.
    Present program and/or courses at national education conferences or bioinformatics conferences with education tracks.
    Uses scientific expertise to review grant proposals and Interacts with potential grantees to obtain additional information.

    Practical experience in a wide range of bioinformatics software Extensive experience with R, Python, Bash
    Skills

    Very strong communication skills, both oral and written
    Experience with teaching working scientists (instructor training from The Carpentries is a plus)
