    Description


    As the Environmental Health and Safety Specialist, you will be responsible for creating and enforcing a culture of safety within the organization.


    Safety - responsible for developing and maintaining company safety procedures and oversees the WLI safety program, safety committee, environmental processes and standards, accident investigations, required report submission, and training.


    Ability to work closely with all levels of the plant and divisional management is paramount to the success of this position.

    The person in this position must be able to accomplish goals and objectives through the effective establishment and facilitation of cross functional teams.

    An understanding of LEAN PRINCIPLES is foundational for the success of this individual. Being able to implement its concepts is paramount.


    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    Expert knowledge of current safety practices, OSHA regulations, EPA, and industrial processes and policies

    Proven background in quality and safety in a precision manufacturing environment

    Strong planning and organizational abilities.

    Experience in training, facilitating, coaching, and implementation with all organizational levels.

    Knowledgeable and capable of establishing/installing work methods and labor measurement standards.

    Experience with 5S/Lean Operations

    Must be proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

    Knowledge of machines and tools, their designs, and uses.


    Knowledge of the ways various systems interact and how changes in operations, the environment, and other conditions will affect outcomes.

    Ability to develop professional relationships to identify problems and deliver solutions.

    Ability to work independently and possess a high level of self-motivation and initiative.


    Duties and Responsibilities:

    Safety Specialist Responsibilities:

    Chair Safety Committee.

    Investigate industrial accidents, injuries, or occupational diseases to determine causes and preventive measures

    Develop and maintain Winpak Lane's Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP)

    Study and analyze Cal/OSHA industry requirements for WLI.

    Develop and recommend policies and procedures to ensure WLI is meeting those requirements.

    Conduct plant-wide safety meetings and maintain training records.

    Communicate safety and environmental issues to management and suggest corrective actions.

    Coordinate and maintain the Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP)

    Files all required reports timely and in accordance to regulations.

    Liaison with insurance carriers and local fire officials during inspections.

    Compile, analyze, and interpret statistical data related to occupational illnesses and accidents.


    Verify compliance with health and safety regulations and ensure all necessary records are maintained and prepared according to established guidelines.

    Maintain and apply knowledge of current policies, regulations, and industrial processes.

    Recommend process and product safety features that will reduce employees' exposure to chemical, physical, and biological work hazards.

    Inspect facility, machinery, and safety equipment to identify and correct potential hazards, and to ensure safety regulation compliance.


    Review plans and specifications for construction of new machinery or equipment to determine whether all safety requirements have been met.

    Evaluate the adequacy of actions taken to correct health inspection violations.

    Attends annual, offsite safety meeting.

    Encourage and promote the use of safer work equipment, materials and supplies.

    Track the number of incidents and produce reports.


    Environmental:

    Support day-to-day operations activities and hazardous materials management at the.

    Oversee the site's chemical control and hazardous waste programs for compliance, tracking, reporting, permitting, and disposal (as appropriate).

    Champion assigned site(s) environmental and sustainability improvement initiatives:

    Facilitate requisite training and compliance to ensure appropriate employee engagement.


    Develop meaningful KPI's relatable at a day-to-day level with employees along with appropriate metrics and reporting to track progress for BU and corporate reporting.

    Identify and implement new, innovative ways to reduce water and energy consumption.

    Implement, communicate, and market sustainability campaigns to internal and external stakeholders.

    Drive site recycling programs with the goal of achieving zero landfill.

    Serve as a liaison for regulatory agencies.


    Sustainability:

    Focus on recycling efforts.

    Focus on sustainability and overall process improvement.

    Expand scrap recovery and minimize waste stream.

    Represent WLI as a member of the corporate Winpak Sustainability Team to share and attain best-practices.

    Support Winpak's sustainability action plan by working with the Corporate Sustainability Director and WLI Advisory Committee to develop.

    Support the data collection for the annual Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) filing and Winpak's sustainability report.


    Stay current with pertinent developments in the expanding field of sustainability and participate in industry events and relevant associations as required.
