    Summary


    Employees in this position perform a variety of semi-skilled highway maintenance tasks to assist in providing the county with safe roadways.


    Employees in this position may be required to perform portions or all of the duties normally falling within the current classification depending on current workload and staffing requirements.

    Other duties may be assigned as required.

    Essential Duties

    Operates a variety of power equipment/vehicles in making minor repairs to roadways, shoulders, and related structures such as bridges and guardrails


    This equipment includes:

    • Pickups
    • Single Axle Trucks
    • Water Pumps
    • Misc. Hand Tools
    • Implements inc. Chainsaws
    • Sanders
    • Chipper Unit
    • Repairs roadway breaks and holes by cleaning and squaring with a jackhammer or other tool and patching with required material.
    • Cleans roadways and related structures by picking up rubbish and debris, sweeping bridges and traffic islands, cleaning ditches and culverts with hand shovel or mechanical equipment and generally maintains roadways in a clean condition.
    • Performs maintenance painting.
    • Assists in painting traffic arrows, crosswalks, and stop bars using templates, spray gun, rollers, and brushes.
    • Cuts brush, trees, and other vegetation from the right-of-way using scythe, chain saw, machete, ax, brush hook, and powered mowers.
    • Assists in landscaping highway rights-of-way, planting and maintaining a variety of ground cover plants and trees.
    • Operates mobile scoop and sander in ice control.
    • Performs various traffic control assignments and uses manual tools to work on posts, guardrails, signs, etc.
    • Performs rough carpentry or stone masonry.
    • Cleans and cares for tools and equipment; performs preventive maintenance.
    • Assists in training other personnel in the use of road equipment.
    • Responds to call out for emergency situations as required.

    Requires the physical strength and ability sufficient to perform manual labor for extended periods under dirty and uncomfortable situations and in all types of weather and temperature conditions.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    • Skilled in the use of manual and power hand tools.
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with coworkers, supervisors and the general public.
    • Knowledge of work zone safety and traffic control.
    • Ability to work in a safe, efficient, and cooperative manner.

    Education and Experience:

    • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
    • A valid Washington State Class A Commercial Driver's license with Tanker Endorsement and acceptable driving record.
    • Ability to obtain and maintain First Aid, CPR, Flagging, and Defensive Driving certifications.
    The County requires a physical examination, hearing examination, and alcohol and drug test. Any offer of employment is contingent upon those results.
