- Sets up birth room for client in labor including checks of emergency equipment;
- Maintains a comfortable, clean environment in the birth room
- Provides ongoing support for client and family as appropriate from admit to discharge;
- Check maternal vital signs, fetal heart tones, and neonate vital signs at intervals according to policy and practice guidelines; reporting any abnormal values to midwife;
- Assist CNMs with tasks surrounding delivery of infant, including but not limited to: ensuring that needed instruments are within reach, assisting with drying and stimulating neonate, and assisting with emergency procedures as dictated by CNM;
- Returns birth room to original condition following discharge of patient(s), including cleaning restocking, sterilizing instruments and tub, removing waste and biohazard materials, replacing instruments used, doing laundry, making bed;
- Reports supplies that need to be ordered, equipment in need of repair, and other birth center needs as appropriate.
- Notes time of all standard and emergency procedures, including vital signs, ROM, birth placenta delivery, all emergency procedures, and medications given
- Experience attending a minimum of 20 labors and births required; experience with out-of-hospital births a plus;
- Valid CPR and NRP certifications;
- Completion of skills test on or before first day of employment;
- Commitment to work with underserved populations;
- Ability to work in a non-profit environment.

Position Summary: The Birth Assistant is accountable directly to the Director of Midwifery. The position is responsible for assisting Certified Nurse Midwives (CNM) with non-clinical duties and serves as second on-site staff member with CPR and NNR certifications. This position will be PRN and scheduled on an as-needed basis at our Family Health and Birth Center in NE DC.

As a Federally Qualified Health Center, we provide medical, dental, emotional wellness, and care coordination services for the whole family at three locations in DC. Community of Hope also strongly emphasizes maternal and child health, with midwifery practice and the only free-standing birth center in DC. In 2020, Community of Hope provided about 28,400 medical visits, 7,000 dental visits, and 10,000 behavioral health visits for about 11,000 patients. Community of Hope provides community walk-in COVID testing and COVID vaccines. Community of Hope is also one of the largest providers in DC of housing and support services for families and individuals experiencing homelessness. Through providing these programs, we live out our mission to improve health and end family and individual homelessness to make Washington, DC, more equitable.
