    The purpose of this job is to conduct accurate and efficient water and electric meter readings. Maintains meter access, equipment, and location data.


    Essential Duties and Responsibilities - The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job.

    Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description


    • Reads meters on assigned routes.
    • Communicates with customers regarding potential problems, coordinates with property managers to access equipment, and troubleshoots meter and billing concerns with co-workers and customers.
    • Assists Utility Service Workers to complete audit billing re-read concerns.
    • Inspects and maintains water tiles.
    • Collects GPS points for water and electric meters.
    • Inspects meters and connections for any defects, irregularities, malfunctions, tampering, and unauthorized connects.
    • Submits work orders for service.
    • Responds to public inquiries and complaints.
    • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    • High School diploma or equivalent.
    Licenses or Certifications


    • Valid driver's license.
    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities which may be representative, but not all-inclusive of those commonly associated with this position


    Knowledge of:

    • Common GPS mapping software applications.
    • Columbia streets.

    Skill in:

    • Typing and/or data entry with minimal errors.
    • Communicating verbally to meet the needs of the audience.
    • Maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.

    Ability to:

    • Use and maintain hand tools.
    • Read, record, and accurately enter readings from distances of 3 to 10 feet.
    • Walk long distances in all weather conditions.
    • Provide high levels of effective customer service.
    • Perform accurate mathematical calculations.
    • Operate handheld computers and meters.

    • This position involves frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards and the majority of work is performed outside or with exposure to risk.
    • Incumbents may be required to exert up to 35 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly having to move objects.
    • Incumbents are required to walk for extended periods of time, up to 15 miles per day.

    Hours/Days

    M-F 7am-3:30pm
