Amyris is seeking a Process Engineer 1 to develop separations processes to isolate target molecules from fermentation broths.As our Process Engineer 1, you will join our Process Development and Engineering (PD&E) team and be part of our Downstream Process Development subgroup.
The PD&E group has responsibility for early and late stage process development, techno economic analysis, laboratory and pilot plant testing, and technology transfer/manufacturing support for commercial facilities both within Amyris and with external CMOs.
This position requires ongoing collaboration with our Operations, Fermentation and Analytical Chemistry teams.This position also demands an individual whose aspirations are consistent with those of Amyris:
high-growth and fast-moving.
Ensuring that our projects are executed safely by our employees and our contractors will always be the top priority for the person in this position.
Key Responsibilities:
Be responsible for individual and co-worker safety; strictly adhere to and support all safety procedures and policies, including PPE and waste handling requirements, regular EHS training, and compliance with Amyris' process safety requirements.
Design, execute and optimize filtration, extraction, distillation, process chromatography, crystallization and spray drying operations to identify optimal operating conditions, define tolerances on process setpoints, and capture separations KPIs including purity, yield, water and energy usage, and waste volumes generated.
Identify, design and execute auxiliary experiments, e.g. stability experiments necessary for successful scale-up.Specify and perform appropriate characterization on feed, product and waste streams including density, viscosity and sediment analysis, optical measurements, microscopy, and chromatography analysis.
Independently troubleshoot aberrant experimental results due to poor process control, sampling errors, analytical errors, or equipment malfunction.Report experimental results with clear conclusions and recommendations supported by sound quantitative analysis of data. Present findings to project team and in department-wide meetings. Author development reports.
Work with Process Development scientists to validate new separations equipment, automation, and analytical tools, including development of SOPs, safety reviews, and testing of model system.
Contribute to preparation of process flow diagrams, SOPs and Batch Records for new downstream operations in the Amyris pilot plant.
Provide input on safety considerations for Process Hazard AnalysisHelp troubleshoot downstream operations at pilot scale, including review of batch records, floor support, analysis of operations data and scale-down testing.
Follow regulatory and hygiene requirements as required to support scale-up and sample generation activities in our process development laboratory and pilot plant.
Develop strong working relationships and work collaboratively across all areas of Amyris, including Analytical, Quality, Fermentation and Operations Teams.Embrace Amyris Core Values
Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Biochemical or Chemical engineering
Experience in a laboratory or pilot plant environment, including generation and analysis of experimental data, characterization of product, and calculation of process KPIs
Experience calculating mass balances, yields and separation factors based on experimental data
Experience communicating experimental plans, analyses, recommendations, and risks clearly and succinctly in written and presentation formats
Experience with MS Excel, Spotfire, JMP and Aspen Plus or equivalent tools for data processing, visualization, statistical data analysis and process simulation
Physical Requirements:
This position requires the physical ability to lift up to 20lb, remain standing for up to 4 hours at a time and climb up to 3 flights of stairs

The annual pay range for this role is $81,500 to $113,500.
Salary offers are made based on internal equity and market analysis, and will vary based on the candidate's skills, depth of experience and specific work location.
