    The Panagiotakos Lab, in the Departments of Psychiatry and Neuroscience at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York, is seeking postdoctoral fellows with expertise in calcium imaging, electrophysiology, developmental neuroscience, stem cell biology, and/or genomics/sequencing approaches to study cellular and molecular mechanisms that underlie the acquisition of cell fate during mammalian brain development.

    Dr. Panagiotakos' team combines multiple complementary approaches, including genetic mouse models, calcium imaging, fluorescence microscopy, pharmacology, cortical slice cultures, and various omics and biochemical analyses, to interrogate roles for calcium signaling and disease risk genes during normal development and in the context of neuropsychiatric disorders of developmental origin. The qualified candidate will use cutting-edge cellular/molecular biology, imaging and sequencing approaches in these studies, including live imaging, CUT & RUN, and various -omics approaches, to investigate the impact and mechanistic underpinnings of disease risk genes on cellular events during brain development, including proliferation, migration, neurogenesis and gliogenesis.

    Responsibilities

    The goals of these studies are to define cell type-specific mechanisms by which the disease-associated DYRK1A kinase regulates the development of the cortex and to interrogate mechanisms calcium signaling-dependent mechanisms contributing to cellular differentiation.

    The results of this work will provide important mechanistic insights into how complex developmental disorders could arise from deficits in calcium signaling and how ubiquitously expressed disease- relevant genes exert specific functions in different cell types.

    Qualifications

    Basic qualifications:
    • PhD or MD/PhD in Developmental and Stem Cell Biology, Neuroscience, or Cellular/Molecular Biology;
    • Demonstrated expertise in cellular/molecular neuroscience, developmental neuroscience, or stem cell biology;
    • Record of publications in peer-reviewed journals;
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
    • Ability to work in an international and interdisciplinary team
    Experience Required:

    The postdoctoral candidate must have a Ph.D. degree in the biological sciences (or proof of completion of all Ph.D. requirements prior to starting) with training/experience in developmental neuroscience, neuroscience, and/or stem cell biology and corresponding cellular/molecular biology bench skills. Preference will be given to candidates with a strong record in techniques for studying calcium signaling, including calcium imaging and electrophysiology. Experience in sequencing approaches with relevant bioinformatics skills is a major plus.

    Technical Duties

    - lead independent project focused on defining cell type specific mechanisms underlying developmental roles for the disease risk gene DYRK1A

    -- technical toolkit will include: single cell RNA sequencing, CUT&RUN, genetic mouse models, calcium imaging, bioinformatics analysis, in vivo mouse surgeries, various molecular biology approaches, immunofluorescence staining and microscopy

    -- work collaboratively and contribute to mentoring junior lab members

    -- cultivate scientific communication skills by contributing to the writing of grant applications and manuscripts and participating in work in progress meetings and other seminar series.
