    This Medical Physics Resident will be a full-time two-year program, tailored to clinical training for Radiation Oncology Physicists, based upon guidelines by the American Association of Physicists in

    Medicine (AAPM), with accreditation provided by the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Education Programs (CAMPEP).

    This role will be overseen by highly skilled and experienced staff within the Department of Radiation Oncology, including six board-certified Physicists, four board-certified Radiation Oncologists and five-board certified Medical Dosimetrists.


    Responsibilities:
    A day in the life of a Medical Physics Resident at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:


    Undergoes clinical physics and dosimetry training rotations designed to support radiotherapy patient care and the quality assurance program within the Medical Center.

    Attends didactic courses and seminars designed to further educate and enhance the clinical rotations.

    Learns the practice and responsibilities of a board-certified medical physicist


    Acquires practical knowledge and skills regarding electron, photon, and neutron radiation transport, particularly as related to dosimetry protocols, shielding design, and computer dose algorithms.

    Gains practical knowledge and skills regarding treatment planning computers, both software and hardware.


    Gains practical knowledge and skills regarding linear accelerators, other teletherapy units, and their accessories and learns to calibrate radiation therapy equipment according to the established procedures and maintains proper records.

    Acquires practical knowledge and skills regarding treatment planning, simulation, and treatment techniques.


    Gains practical knowledge and skills regarding nuclear instrumentation, radiation monitors, dosimetry equipment (particularly ionization chambers, film, and thermoluminescent dosimeters), and automatic data acquisition systems.

    Learns to prepare computer generated treatment plans for High-dose rate (HDR) remote afterloading Brachytherapy procedures. Learns to performs calibration and quality assurance on HDR treatment unit. Learns to assist Radiation Oncologist in the delivery of the patient treatment.

    Learns to perform radiation surveys of patient and HDR treatment room environs as per regulations and to maintain proper records.


    Learns to prepare computer generated treatment plans for Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS), Stereotactic Radiotherapy (SRT), Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT) and Gamma Knife procedures.

    Learns to perform calibration and quality assurance required for these procedures and gains knowledge of assisting Therapists & Radiation Oncologists in the delivery of the patient treatment.

    Learns to maintain proper records.

    Gains practical knowledge in preparing computer generated treatment plans for Total Body Irradiation (TBI) procedures. Learns to acquire measurements necessary to generate the treatment plans. Learns to perform calibration and quality assurance required for these procedures.

    Learns to assist Therapists & Radiation Oncologists in the assessment of delivery of the patient treatment and learns to maintain proper records.


    Acquires practical knowledge in performing Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) patient specific quality assurance in accordance with departmental policy and procedures.

    Learns to maintain proper records.

    Learns to participate in the activities of the Quality Improvement in Radiation Oncology Department.

    Gains practical expertise in acceptance testing & commissioning of new or replacement equipment in the Department of Radiation Oncology.


    Learns to participate in acceptance testing & commissioning of new or upgraded treatment planning systems in Department of Radiation Oncology.


    Gains practical knowledge in the design and evaluation of protective shielding involving radiation therapy in the Medical Center as necessary.


    Learns to perform radiation surveys, survey meters and ion chamber calibrations, wipe tests, area monitoring, isotope inventory control, etc., according to the established procedures and maintains proper records.

    Acquires practical knowledge and skills regarding quality assurance of radiotherapy equipment.

    Acquires practical knowledge and expertise regarding radioactive sources used for brachytherapy and brachytherapy devices such as manual and remote after-loaders

    Learns to keep abreast of the evolving techniques in Radiation Therapy.

    Gains knowledge and skill in the operation of the record and verify systems.

    Learns to stablishes goal for self-development, recognizing personal strengths and limitations.

    Learns to coordinate and implement assignments as requested by Director of Medical Physics.

    Other duties and/or projects as assigned.

    Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.


    Qualifications:

    Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
    Master's diploma/degree in physics/radiation physics field or other relevant area of study.

    Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

    Proficient computer skills that include but are not limited to Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.


    Licenses and Certifications Required:
    Working towards certification by the American Board of Radiology.
