    Description

    Job Summary

    A Trades Specialist (Electrician) is responsible for all electrical work, including planning and laying out work, and diagnosing trouble in electrical systems or equipment in an assigned area, project, or facility.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Performs journeyman level electrical duties.
    • Working knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in electrical trade.
    • Repairs, maintains, and installs electrical systems and equipment, including fixtures, motors, load centers, relays, controls, circuitry, and related equipment, consistent with the National Electrical Code.
    • Locates and determines electrical malfunctions using test instruments such as ammeter, volt meter, and ohmmeter.
    • Will be required to plan and lay out work, develop time and material lists for projects assigned.
    • Will be required to read and interpret plans, codes, diagrams, architectural blueprints, and specifications.
    • Tests, adjusts, calibrates, and maintains a wide variety of control equipment, including building heating, air conditioning, and ventilating equipment controls for refrigeration; and for a wide variety of other equipment and systems.
    • Performs maintenance and preventative maintenance on mechanical equipment, including bathroom exhaust fans, clothes dryers, sump pumps, and generators.
    • Will be required to train and supervise others.
    • Ability to climb ladders, work from scaffolding, and mechanical lifts.

    Requirements:

    • Working knowledge of methods, material, tools, and equipment used in the craft or crafts to which assigned.
    • Working knowledge of applicable standards and plumbing and electrical code regulations.
    • Working knowledge of the rules and regulations of the facility governing the activities of State wards.
    • Ability to use the tools, machines, equipment, and material of the craft or crafts to which assigned.
    • Ability to train and supervise others.
    • Ability to plan and lay out work and diagnose problems.
    • Ability to read and interpret plans, diagrams, architectural blueprints, and specifications.
    • Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.

    Qualifications:

    Four years of full-time experience in the electrical trade under a skilled tradesperson, providing training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program, or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in the electrical trade at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services. Alternatively, successful completion of the two-year Trades Specialist (Electrician) traineeship or a two-year electrician training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program, including 288 hours of trade-specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math coursework, 45 hours of technical communications coursework, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading coursework, with a minimum average grade of C. Additionally, successful completion of the traineeship includes 4,000 hours of on-the-job training.
