    SENIOR HEALTH PHYSICIST - HYBRID

    This position may work a hybrid schedule at the discretion of the manager or supervisor, which will require occasional attendance in the office for training, meetings and other operational needs.

    Employees must reside within a reasonable distance to their assigned headquarters for compliance with workplace reporting requirements.


    What You'll Do:
    The Bureau of Environmental Health and Radiation Protection is seeking a candidate to fill our Senior Health Physicist position.

    This position will perform complex and non-repetitive evaluation of production, use, release, disposal and or presence of radioactive material in environment, nuclear facilities, or ionizing radiation from any device or equipment that emits or is capable of producing radiation.


    This position will:
    * as a field coordinator, assess potential health and safety problems and act expediently to minimize health effects to general public and workers from potential exposure incidences
    * support ODH radiological emergency preparedness staff to provide training to local health departments and first responders in Ohio on radiation emergencies (radiation fundamentals, hands on radiation survey instrumentation and their use and provide guidance on local procedures and plans)
    * support and participate in local exercises and tabletop sessions
    * develop and implement RHS plans, procedures, and guidance on radiological health emergency planning and protective actions
    * develop and maintain outreach program that provides expertise to local, state, and federal agencies, and non-governmental organizations (public health districts, Red Cross, volunteer groups, community reception centers) on radiological issues and approaches
    * develop and give presentations on radiation protection and radiological emergency preparedness

    Position Qualifications:


    4 years of full-time experience working with one of following: radioactive materials, analysis of radioactive materials in environment, decommissioning of sites contaminated with radioactive materials, radiation- generating equipment for x-ray program, experience that deals with regulatory requirements that involves radiation surveys for dose assessment, radiation inspects, analysis of situations involving radioactive materials or radiologic health & safety; must be able to provide own transportation.


    • Or Completion of undergraduate core program in health physics, nuclear physics, nuclear engineering, radiation physics, radiation sciences, bionucleonics, radiologic technology, nuclear medicine technology, radiation therapy or physics; 24 mos. of full-time experience working with one of following: radioactive materials which must include engineering principles relative to effects of radiation on metals, & other components of radioactive material sources or devices, analysis of radioactive materials in environment, decommissioning of sites contaminated with radioactive materials, radiation- generating equipment, experience that deals with regulatory requirements that involves radiation surveys for dose assessment, radiation inspections, analysis of situations involving radioactive materials or radiologic health & safety; must be able to provide own transportation.
    • Or NRRPT, CHP, NMTCB or ARRT certification; 24 mos. of full-time experience working with one of following: radioactive materials which must include engineering principles relative to effects of radiation on metals, & other components of radioactive material sources or devices, analysis of radioactive materials in environment, decommissioning of sites contaminated with radioactive materials, radiation- generating equipment, experience that deals with regulatory requirements that involves radiation surveys for dose assessment, radiation inspections, analysis of situations involving radioactive materials or radiologic health & safety; must be able to provide own transportation.
    • Or Completion of Navy nuclear school; 24 mos. of full-time experience working with one of following: radioactive materials which must include engineering principles relative to effects of radiation on metals, & other components of radioactive material sources or devices, analysis of radioactive materials in environment, decommissioning of sites contaminated with radioactive materials, radiation- generating equipment, experience that deals with regulatory requirements that involves radiation surveys for dose assessment, radiation inspections, analysis of situations involving radioactive materials or radiologic health & safety; must be able to provide own transportation.
    • Or Completion of graduate core program in health physics, nuclear physics, nuclear engineering, radiation physics, radiation sciences, bionucleonics, radiologic technology, nuclear medicine technology, radiation therapy or physics; 12 mos. of full-time experience working with one of following: radioactive materials which must include engineering principles relative to effects of radiation on metals, & other components of radioactive material sources or devices, analysis of radioactive materials in environment, decommissioning of sites contaminated with radioactive materials, radiation- generating equipment, experience that deals with regulatory requirements that involves radiation surveys for dose assessment, radiation inspections, analysis of situations involving radioactive materials or radiologic health & safety must be able to provide own transportation.
    • Or 24 mos. exp. as Health Physicist, 84642, must be able to provide own transportation.
    • Or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications For Employment noted above

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Bachelor's or advanced degree in health physics, nuclear physics, nuclear engineering, radiation physics, radiation sciences, bionucleonics, radiologic technology, nuclear medicine technology, radiation therapy or physics
    • Experience developing radiological emergency response plans and procedures
    • Experience in writing technical reports
    • Experience using program specific computer software such as MicroShield, RadDecay, RadResponder, HotSpot, RASCAL, and/or RESRAD
    • Experience providing radiological consultation/technical assistance to clients
    • Experience in a radiation safety program handling radioactive materials
    • Current Hazardous Waste Operator and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) Certification
    • Experience with air sampling or environmental monitoring for radioactive material
    • Experience responding to radiological emergencies (e.g., incidents, events, reportable events or allegations)
    • Experience developing and presenting radiological training
    • Experience using hand-held radiological detection instruments for alpha, beta, gamma, and neutron radiation
