    Description

    The Cook Laboratory in the Department of Medicine at the University of Virginia is hiring a Laboratory Specialist Intermediate , Senior or Manager depending on the qualifications and experience of the applicant.

    The Cook laboratory uses engineered T cells for cancer therapy with three main research areas: 1) Identifying tumor-reactive T cell receptors (TCRs), 2) Developing and optimizing an antigen identification platform to characterize potential therapeutic TCRs, and 3) Utilizing genomic screens to identify new strategies to improve T cell therapy efficacy through either overcoming a suppressive tumor microenvironment, boosting T cell persistence, and enhancing the function of T cells in vivo. The Cook Laboratory aims to translate these discoveries into clinical cell products for cancer treatments. The lab is in MR-6 at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.

    This position represents an exciting opportunity for recent graduates seeking to gain research experience before applying to Ph.D., MD, or MD-PhD programs or even more experienced scientists looking to continue their scientific career in cutting-edge field.

    JOB RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

    • Pursue research projects under the direct guidance of the principal investigator to characterize
    • Maintaining excellent lab records using digital and traditional lab notebooks.
    • Presenting research findings at lab meetings
    • The experimental methodologies span a variety of techniques, including fundamental molecular biology procedures like gene cloning, PCR, nucleic acid isolation, and gel electrophoresis. Additionally, a high level of proficiency in aseptic practices is employed for the cultivation of tumor and primary cells, virus generation, and various cellular manipulations are required. Experience with multi-color flow cytometry.
    • General lab duties include ordering and purchasing for the lab using the UVA Marketplace and tasks involved in overall laboratory maintenance, including maintaining a clean workspace and preparing buffers and other reagents.
    REQUIRED AND PREFERRED SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES:
    • Previous lab experience, including basic molecular biology skills (PCR, cloning, etc.), & multicolor flow cytometry. Experience with cell culture and mouse modeling is an asset
    • Proficiency with computer software, including Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
    • Ability to work independently and as a team member
    • Excellent communication and organizational skills
    • Flexibility and adaptability to a challenging and fast-paced environment
    • For more experienced applicants, you must be proficient in both in vitro and in vivo work but not necessarily T cell-focused.
    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR LAB SPECIALIST INTERMEDIATE:

    Education: Bachelor's degree.

    Experience: 6 years of experience in a lab technician role. Master's degree may substitute for required experience. 9 years of lab-related experience accepted in lieu of degree.

    Licensure: None.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR LAB SPECIALIST SENIOR:

    Education: Bachelor's degree.

    Experience: 9 years of experience in a lab technician role. May substitute with Master's or Terminal degree plus 4 years of experience in a lab technician role and supervisory experience. 12 years of lab-related experience accepted in lieu of degree.

    Licensure: None.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR LAB MANAGER:

    Education: Master's degree. Bachelor's degree accepted with additional experience.

    Experience: Master's degree: F our years of experience in lab technical and supervisory role. Bachelor's Degree: Six years of experience in lab technical and/or supervisory role.

    Licensure: Medical Laboratory Technician certification preferred. Certain areas may require certification to be obtained through the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP).

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS

    This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.
