- Provide expert medical and surgical care for laboratory animals to ensure humane and adequate veterinary support.
- Conduct physical, ophthalmic, and other necessary examinations on laboratory animals, with a focus on nonhuman primates (NHPs).
- Manage clinical cases, including diagnosis, treatment, and followup.
- Collaborate with the site supervisor to ensure that animal care and welfare policies and practices are compliant with relevant regulations.
- Oversee animal pairing and group formation to ensure compatibility, mental wellbeing, and the prevention of stressrelated illnesses.
- Implement environmental enrichment programs to promote the health and mental wellbeing of all animals.
- Update and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) related to veterinary care and animal welfare.
- Provide mentoring and support to other veterinarians and supporting staff.
- Conduct training sessions for both veterinary and supporting staff, ensuring compliance with best practices in laboratory animal medicine.
- Oversee husbandry staff training to enhance their skills and knowledge in animal care.
- Collaborate with senior management on growth designs and strategic initiatives to elevate the veterinary program to a 5star standard.
- Ensure that all aspects of animal care, including physiological welfare, environmental enrichment, and group dynamics, align with the highest standards in the field.
- Maintain active DEA registration and obtain or commit to obtaining a Florida DVM license within 60 days of employment.
- Work with site leadership to guarantee that policies and procedures pertaining to animal care and welfare remain in compliance with applicable regulations.
