    Description
    Performs responsible accounting support and administrative work in the preparation, processing, maintenance and verification of accounting documents and records. This work requires the application of accounting methods and knowledge of a range of accounting principles.

    Makes payment on invoices ensuring appropriate approvals are in place
    Maintains double entry booking keeping
    Reviews and posts receipts and reconciles receivables to the general ledger
    Prepares and sends accounts receivable billing statements
    Works with other departments to determine when an account is eligible for a refund
    Responds to inquiries, internal and external, regarding billing matters while keeping supervisor informed
    Ensures the Sheriff Fee weekly report is endorsed and copied before delivery to the Treasury's Office
    Retains documentation on all petty cash distributed and received
    Follows all internal accounting controls
    Updates the state comp monthly spreadsheet with Sheriff's Office personnel to include salaries/fringe benefits and adjustments before tax
    Keeps an updated list of all credit card holders and amounts
    Performs credit card line entry in our software system to ensure payment is processed on time
    Reconciles bank statements
    Prepares informational spreadsheets
    Collects and tracks invoices and account information from purchase orders and expenditures
    Files various fiscal transactions according to the Library of Virginia records retention and disposition schedule
    Prepares and reconciles records and ledgers; assist in the preparation of financial and accounting documents
    Researches and responds to employee or vendor inquiries, requests, and complaints
    Resolves complaints in an efficient and timely manner while keeping supervisor informed.
    Utilizes various computer programsto enter and maintain data
    Posts information to ledgers, journals, and reports
    Generates reports and creates spreadsheets from database or accounting systems
    Maintains attention to detail by prioritizing work and coordinates multiple activities simultaneously despite interruptions
    Functions as back up support to the Finance Team as needed
    May perform other related work as assigned
    Thorough knowledge of bookkeeping terminology, methods, procedures and equipment; general knowledge of standard office procedures, practices, and equipment; general knowledge of governmental accounting principles, procedures, practices, and related data processing systems, equipment and software; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; ability to establish and follow detailed work procedures; ability to post accounts and to perform mathematical computations with speed


    and accuracy utilizing computer system; skill to use a variety of office machines; ability to get along well with others.

    Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school, supplemented by courses in bookkeeping and extensive experience in general office work.

    Minimum 2 years of prior experience as an Accounting Technician or in similar role.
    Prior experience in a law enforcement agency preferred.

    Special Requirements

    This is sedentary work requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects, and some light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires stooping, reaching, fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operation of machines, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside environmental conditions.
