    INTRODUCTION:

    The Prevention Specialist plays a critical role in developing and implementing prevention programs and initiatives aimed at addressing substance abuse, mental health issues, and related challenges within the community. This position involves collaborating with stakeholders, conducting outreach and education efforts, collecting and analyzing data, and planning and assisting in prevention activities in the community and surrounding area. The Prevention Specialist will work with primarily but not limited to the target age group of 12-24 by providing education and information on drugs, alcohol, smoking cessation, problem gambling, suicide prevention, and other prevention topics as needed.

    MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Work as a team member and assist in the development of a strong community-based prevention program
    • Work closely with local school districts, Indian Health Services, youth centers, the Boys and Girls Club, and other stakeholders
    • Assist in completing needs assessments, scheduling, planning, organizing, and operating prevention activities throughout the year.
    • Attend mandatory program/licensure trainings
    • Act as chaperone for youth at training trips, and other youth activities as needed
    • Conduct outreach activities to raise awareness about substance abuse and mental health issues
    • Develop and deliver educational presentations, workshops, and materials to diverse audiences, including youth, families, schools, and community organizations.
    • Forge partnerships with community organizations, schools, healthcare providers, law enforcement agencies, and other stakeholders to coordinate prevention efforts.
    • Participate in coalitions, task forces, and committees focused on substance abuse prevention and mental health promotion.
    • Analyze data to assess the effectiveness of prevention efforts and identify areas for improvement.
    • Adhere to ethical standards, confidentiality requirements, and professional codes of conduct in all aspects of prevention work.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & RESPONSIBILITIES REQUIRED:

    · Strong interpersonal and customer service skills including oral and written communication.

    · Excellent organizational and time management skills.

    · Ability to work flexible hours.

    · Ability to follow all applicable policies procedures, and standards.

    · Knowledge of Spokane Tribe and Stevens County social services and other community resources.

    · Knowledge of HIPAA and all Health and Human Services policies on confidentiality.

    · Must have proficient computer skills.

    · Maintain strict codes of confidentiality.

    · Perform duties in an ethical and professional manner.

    · Have the ability to utilize computer, Microsoft Software, fax machines and scanners.

    · Attend relevant and ongoing training.

    · Communicate to Supervisor on regular basis.

    · Communicate with the community in a positive and effective manner.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    • High School Diploma or Equivalent
    • Demonstrated knowledge and experience or understanding of Tribal settings, rural programs and experience working with Tribal youth, Tribal community groups and Tribal governmental entities
    • Must be able to pass a background check
    • Must have a valid Washington State Drivers' License and be tribally insurable
    • Must not have a history of alcohol or other drug misuse for a period of two years before employment or during period of employment with the Spokane Tribe of Indians

    CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

    • First Aid/CPR or obtain within six months
    • Suicide prevention certification or obtain within six months
    • Certified Tobacco Interventionist or obtain within six months
    • Must apply for the Certified Prevention Professional (CPP) or Associate Prevention Professional (APP) Credential through the Prevention Specialist Certification Board of Washington within six months of hire
