- Assists in the control of communicable diseases through preventive immunization programs, early detection, surveillance and the reporting of contagious diseases
- Oversees health services provided to students with special health needs
- Provides staff training related to health procedures
- Coordinates and provides health screens and referrals
- Coordinates and assists in obtaining and maintaining student health data
- Serves as a resource for accident and injury treatment and prevention
- Promotes a comprehensive health education curriculum for students which stresses positive life-long behaviors which maintain and enhance positive wellness
- Counsels with students on health-related issues
- Supervises the administration of medications in the schools
- Serves as a liaison between the parents, teachers, and other school personnel in matters of health
- Identifies opportunities and recommends methods to improve service, work processes and financial performance, e.g. expense management. Assists in the implementation of quality improvement initiatives
- Performs vision, hearing and scoliosis screening according to state guidelines.
- Helps formulate policies and procedures in conjunction with supervisors and staff related to health issues as needed
- Develops individualized emergency/health plans on identified medically fragile students as necessary and shares this information with appropriate school personnel
- Acts as a resource to teachers and students in promoting careers in the health care professions
- Serves as a resource and provides instruction in various health related topics as mandated by state statutes, or as needed
- Serves on the Crisis Team at assigned schools
- Assists in the review of the WBRPSB Student Handbook for policy revision, as necessary
- Provides and maintains first aid and other materials related to student health
- Provides courteous and prompt service to all internal and external customers including students, parents, co-workers, etc.
- Schedules and/or attends conferences with parents
- Prioritizes and addresses requests and assignments in a professional manner to develop cooperative relationships and to ensure that student and employee records' confidentially is assured

GENERAL OVERVIEW
Enhances the educational process by promoting an optimal level of health for students and staff.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
Certified School Nurse with current license to practice as a registered nurse in the State of Louisiana; and at least two years in the practice of nursing.
ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Work Environment: The School Nurse will work in an environment adhering to the School Board energy policy. The workday consists of regular school hours. Then length of the workday varies as the result of evening activities or emergencies. In addition, job responsibilities may require work on weekends or holidays and attendance at meetings.
Communication Skills: The School Nurse must be able to effectively communicate in English both orally and in writing. Must have ability to accurately give and receive information via telecommunication system and must be able to communicate successfully with students, teachers, parents, school personnel, and the community.
Equipment Used: The School Nurse should be able to use a telephone, audio-visual equipment, computer, copy machine, laminator, calculator, and other appropriate health-related machines/equipment.
Physical and Mental Involvement: The School Nurse should be able to perform these physical activities: standing, walking, reaching bending, and lifting 40 pounds (sometimes required). The School Nurse must be able to plan and implement appropriate health programs projects. Must be able to understand and interpret written and verbal instructions. Must keep accurate, up-to-date records. Must be able to comply with federal, state and parish regulations.
Human Relations: The School Nurse must be able to work cooperatively with district personnel and the community. Must be able to respond appropriately to supervision and accept commendations and recommendations. Must demonstrate sensitivity/understanding in interpersonal relations with persons of diverse cultures/backgrounds.
