    Job Description

    The Director of Nursing Education is a professional nurse with a comprehensive knowledge and skill in education in the workplace. This individual is responsible for the teaching/learning process and advancing nursing practice within the operations of the Nursing Department and the Hospital.

    Serves as an advisor to the CNO and Nursing Leadership for the promotion of new learning and insure competency assessment at all levels for the advancement of professional nursing and quality patient care.

    Responsibilities

    Roles and Responsibilities:

    Clinical Leadership
    • Formulates, interprets and implements the philosophy, mission, vision, values, policies, and standards for nursing care through the implementation of educational operations based on evidence based practice.
    • Coordinates Clinical Specialty and Departmental requirements related to credentialing of nursing staff and advanced practice nurses in collaboration with the Senior Director of APN according to the Joint Commission and CMS standards for Human Resources and Medical Staff
    • Provides leadership for design and implementation of high level of staff professional development which includes: orientation, ongoing staff education, implementation of a new graduate residency program/student nurse internship program, development of leadership and managerial skills, as well as coordination of nursing student experiences in the Nursing Department.
    • Collaborates with the Senior DON Advanced Practice (APN) ensure data supports the credentialing of advanced practice nurses that meets standards set by the Nursing Executive Committee and the Medical Board.
    • Collaborates with the Clinical Directors and nursing staff to promote a spirit of inquiry and to develop evidence based standards/studies for the investigation of best practices to promote performance improvement based on data and outcomes.
    • Leads educational efforts for the promotion of the Professional Practice Model of Relationship Centered Care and the Care Delivery Model of Modified Primary Nursing and the Patient Experience HCAHPS/Press Ganey reinforcing staff knowledge and skills.
    • Leads and participates in core department redesign and improvement activities to support the CNO and Nursing Leadership and Clinical Services in advancing clinical practice of patient care and to assure adequate resources are identified for professional development, in alignment with the Lean Daily Improvement methodology inclusive of the Daily Management Boards enacted in all care delivery areas
    • Leads the development of professional practice and innovative educational criteria/processes for establishing standards of patient care and the performance of competent nursing practice in collaboration with nursing quality and magnet criteria.
    • Co-Chair designee for the Nursing Executive Committee in collaboration with the Director of Professional Practice and the CNO.
    • Leads site committee structures/related activities to support the Professional Practice Model and the Care Delivery Model through Nursing Professional Practice and Informatics Committees, Quality Improvement, Peer Review, Nursing Documentation and Nursing Research Committees.
    • Assumes a leadership role in the MSHS Professional Development Council to insure effective and efficient approaches to orientation, on-site learning, competency assessment and liaison with the Phillips School of Nursing of Mount Sinai.
    • Assumes a leadership role within the redesigation efforts of the Magnet Designation within the criteria of Professional Development and Structural Empowerment.
    • Ensures the development of interdisciplinary team approaches to educational and process improvement activities and evaluates the impact on clinical outcomes, RN engagement, and the patient experience.
    • Facilitates the utilization of evidence and research findings in the teaching-learning process for the delivery of safe and quality nursing care.
    • Participates in and assumes leadership roles in health system and professional nursing initiatives and provides opportunities for staff participation.
    • Assumes a leadership role in medical center interdepartmental and medical board committees as well as nursing committees.
    Administration
    • Participates with Hospital and System nursing executive and other departmental leaders in the in hospital decision-making structures and processes.
    • Ensures an appropriate staffing plan is implemented within Nursing Education and oversees all functions are effectively and efficiently meeting the goals of Nursing Education and the Nursing Department.
    • Creates innovative educational processes for nursing staff conducting ongoing learning needs assessments to guide initiatives.
    • Collaborates with the Clinical Directors to insure a comprehensive orientation and competency assessment for all clinical specialties is meeting standards.
    • Insures all tools are in effect to monitor the progress and success of central and unit based orientation in an ongoing manner based on factual weekly evaluations, unit rounds and discussion with assigned educators.
    • Insures meticulous record keeping and documentation of required educational activities for all levels of nursing staff.
    • Approves all levels of tuition and conference reimbursement for nursing staff, in an efficient manner, complying with all standards for union and nonunion nursing staff.
    • Manages Nursing Education operations with financial stewardship and oversees efficiency of staff assignments through insurance of compliance with all mandatory regulations.
    • Oversees that the Nursing Staff is compliant with ALL Mandatory Requirements for initial and ongoing education as per policy, state and regulatory regulations with compliance for necessary documentation.
    • Maintains the educational learning management system (PEAK) for nursing staff as a professional education communication/leaning documentation medium
    • Aligns all education with Nursing, Hospital and System policies and procedures and designs and disseminates accurate communication as needed such as practice alerts, Fact Sheets, Tip Sheets, etc.
    • In collaboration with the Senior Director APN, ensures the implementation of Nursing and Medical Board specific standards in collaboration with the Clinical Directors to support the credentialing of advanced practice clinicians and registered nurses.
    • Supports the clinical leadership in the development of interdisciplinary and nursing standards, policies and procedures relevant to the scope of professional nursing practice.
    • Participates in strategic planning initiatives and formulates annual goals that support the goals of the hospital and Department of Nursing, inclusive of research and educational initiatives.
    • Participates with other leaders to ensure the competency assessment of staff/credentialing in compliance with internal standards and external regulatory standards.
    • Represents the Department of Nursing/MSHS on hospital committees and teams.
    Management of Human Resources and Professional Development
    • Ensures that personnel issues are managed in compliance with contractual agreements and support positive employee-management relationships.
    • Insures all Nursing Staff meets The Joint Commission HR standards for personnel file management for the hospital
    • Collaborates with other nursing and hospital leaders to promote professional development of nursing staff.
    • Demonstrates knowledge of all NYSNA and 1199 contractual regulations as it relates to education and the teaching/learning process
    • Directs Continuing Education Providership according to state nursing requirements and maintains all necessary records.
    • Directs all nursing tuition/conference reimbursement processes meeting union and financial standards.
    • Co-chairs the Nursing Practice Committee and coordinates relevant educational and practice initiatives
    • Participates in the Nursing Executive Committee and supports the CNO in this work.
    • Ensures all personnel, are appropriately credentialed, competent, and complete ongoing mandatory programs to provide patient care.
    • Develops and coordinates undergraduate and graduate student experiences, and mentoring programs in accordance with hospital policy and school affiliation agreements
    • Maintains current school affiliation contracts for external clinical practicum arrangements and coordinates educational activities with the Phillips School of Nursing of Mount Sinai.
    • Reevaluates periodically competency requirements for position descriptions based on the changing needs of the patient population and professional standards in collaboration with Human Resource policies.
    Fiscal Management
    • Responsible for the formulation and monitoring of the nursing budget for Nursing Education and meeting financial targets.
    • Disseminates and interprets information for Nursing Education related to meeting all orientation goals, residency retention rates and employment of student nurse interns and student nurses in general
    • Investigate options for external funding and grants to assist in the support of professional development initiatives for nursing

    3. Participates in public speaking, publishing and creating an environment for scholarly, professional nursing practice.
    4. Serves as consultant for other healthcare organizations and academic institutions on pertinent nursing and health care issues.
    5. Maintains awareness of current trends and legislation affecting the nursing profession and healthcare delivery.

    Qualifications

    Requirements:
    • Licensure: New York State License as a registered professional nurse with current registration.
    • Education: Bachelors Degree in Nursing: Masters degree in Nursing; doctorate preferred.
    • Board Certification in a Clinical Specialty or Professional Development strongly preferred
    • Demonstrated expertise in the individuals specialized practice area and management of the nursing core activities of education, the teaching learning process and standards within the workplace setting. Minimum of 10 years of leadership and academic experience required.
    • Bachelors degree in Nursing (Masters degree in Nursing or Doctorate preferred).
