    JOB SUMMARY:
    Assist dock supervisor in overseeing the loading, unloading and distribution of donated materials from trailers and trucks.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES Assist supervisor in the following operations:

    Establish and maintain an efficient production pace; ensure that established standards of quality and quantity are being met by handlers; organize and monitor work flow on the loading dock and the salvage area; maintain a safe, clean work environment.

    Provide work direction by example and oral communication to handlers; oversee the activities of the dock in the absence of the supervisor; provide job and/or safety training to new employees under the direction of the supervisor.

    Ensure the maintenance and proper use of equipment, including hand trucks, forklifts, and the dump truck.
    Off-load truck and trailers by removing materials and placing in designated areas.
    Load trucks by placing materials in designated trucks.

    Transport materials to appropriate departments and locations, including transporting waste to the dump (via truck) and moving materials (via forklift).Determine salability of furniture and large appliances for sale at the retail stores and the bargain outlet.

    Recycle unusable metal items into metal salvage container.

    SECONDARY DUTIESDispose of trash; process textile and cardboard salvage, process metal salvage, including appropriately storing material and/or dispersing it to buyers; perform shoes salvage (storage); clean the dock, bays, storage and dump areas.

    Move vehicles (such as bobtail truck) as needed.
    Perform related duties as assigned.


    QualificationsJOB SPECIFICATIONSEDUCATION REQUIRED:
    High school diploma or equivalent

    LICENSE/CERTIFICATION REQD:
    Valid California Class C drivers license and/or forklift certification, or equivalent

    EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
    One year material handler experience, including six months as a material handler 2, or equivalent

    KNOWLEDGE:
    Basic math ability.
    Material handling techniques and use of material handling equipment.
    Familiarity with Goodwill Central Coasts mission, general Company policies and procedures (this may be learned on-the-job).


    EQUIPMENT USED:
    Typical material handling equipment, bale machine, forklift, trucks

    SKILLS/APTITUDES/TEMPERAMENTS:
    Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing. Ability to communicate in basic Spanish required or preferred, depending on location.
    Ability to drive a forklift in the transaction of duties. Depending on specific position, may require ability to drive vehicles in the transaction of Company business. This requires a good driving record.
    Ability to perform routine work, adapting to change as it relates to work flow without loss of efficiency.
    Ability to accept responsibility for the direction, control or planning of an activity.
    Ability to maintain self-control, deal effectively with the public and work in cooperation with co-workers.

    Ability to coordinate eye/hand/foot movement to safely maneuver in and out of trucks and trailers, operate vehicle controls, walk up and down ramps and lift and/or stack donations.

    Ability to make judgments regarding acceptability of donations based on established criteria. Ability to demonstrate satisfactory attendance as outlined in Company policy.

    Ability to adhere to safe work practices as documented in Company safety policies; ability to report safety hazards promptly to supervisor or safety committee member.


    EMOTIONAL EFFORT:
    The job requires some emotional effort involving occasional short deadlines. The work environment is varied with occasional periods of high activity/demand. JOB SETTINGWork is performed on covered, but unenclosed dock area. The temperature and exposure to elements will fluctuate depending on weather conditions. Dust and dirt is controlled by daily cleaning of work area. There are occasional fumes from the trucks. There is occasional handling of household toxic products received in donations. Work is completed independently but in cooperation with whole department. There is occasional contact with public who donate at the dock.

    The noise volume is moderately high throughout the day depending on the amount of activity, equipment and vehicles in operation and radio operation.

    Material handling equipment (forklift, hand truck, movable containers/racks) and trucks may be operated in or near work area.
    The job includes occasionally walking on uneven ground when going up and down ramps; otherwise, ground/work surface is even. PHYSICAL DEMANDSThe job requires consistent lifting of objects weighing up to 50 lbs. Heavier items (51 lbs. or more) will be moved either with assistance from another person or by using appropriate material handling equipment.
    Normal or corrected talking, hearing, and seeing abilities are sufficient to perform the required tasks.
    Sufficient mobility is required to walk up/down ramps, climb in/out of trucks and walk on uneven ground.
