Job Description JOB TITLE: Assistant Professor of Music, Choral Director CLASSIFICATION: Professional DIVISION: Academic Affairs DEPARTMENT: Music REPORTS TO: Chair, Department of Music START DATE : JOB SUMMARY: The Department of Music invites applications for a tenure-track Visiting Assistant Professor of music beginning Spring 2024. The Department seeks a passionate musician and educator interested in working with students within the music major or minor and students taking elective courses. The preferred candidate will have experience evaluating and proposing changes to music curriculum within a liberal arts institution. In conjunction with the curriculum coherency project initiated by President Brenda Allen, the chosen candidate will work with other faculty in the music program to update the current music major and minor. The new curriculum implementation will support student success through timely graduation, development of high impact practices and elimination of academic gaps or repetition. The chosen candidate will teach and advise students in the music program, as well as, lead the University's choirs in conjunction with the Music Department. The candidate will be responsible for Choral activities including: supervision of all student participants, procuring uniforms per the University's Purchasing Department policies and arranging and conducting all performances. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The successful candidate will... Teach and/or oversee: Choral Conducting Opera Workshop (Spring semester) Candidate will select the performance, audition students and schedule rehearsals for Opera Private voice lessons Private instrumental lessons (preferred) Other courses related to expertise Direct regular Concert Choir rehearsals and performances. The choir meets Monday thru Thursday on a weekly basis. Prepare the music and formations for all performances Schedule all performances and all travel in accordance with University policies and procedures Be responsible for the conduct and behavior of all choir members and the enforcement of University policies and sanctions relative to student's academic and judicial performance Accompany all University choir activities and performances Support and evaluate Music students performing in recitals, juries and sophomore/ junior reviews Recruit choir members and provide mentorship, guidance and support for the Concert Choir Be a contributing member of departmental and university initiatives Advise and recruit students to the Music Program Maintain active professional engagement and research, which are required for promotion and tenure consideration EDUCATION: Doctorate or ABD with date for completion by start of appointment (August 2021) EXPERIENCE: 5 or more years of university level teaching in a music program Extensive knowledge of a wide variety of choral repertoire at the collegiate level A proven track record in recruitment of students Experience in developing/ revising a student handbook for music majors Experience in assessment of curriculum and student learning outcomes Experience and interest in course development Experience and interest in program revision Proven communication skills consistent with effective teaching, mentoring and motivating music majors and minors from a broad range of cultural, ethnic, and economic backgrounds QUALIFICATIONS: Must be dedicated to the mission of Historically Black Colleges and Universities and be well acquainted with the music of Black composers. Must have the ability to oversee a Choral Spring Tour at the conclusion of the Spring semester. Must have proven experience with the production of opera and musical theater. Must have good interpersonal skills in order to communicate effectively with people from varied social, educational, and economic backgrounds. Must be an excellent musician, composer and/or music arranger. Must possess excellent written and oral communication skills. Must be able to support traditional and non-traditional students on a college campus as well as implement early intervention strategies that promote student success. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is primarily performed in a university campus environment and requires a flexible schedule including evening and weekend work. Travel for administrative work is expected as well as concert performances at varied locations. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Moderate lifting up to 20 pounds as frequently as needed to move objects; dexterity to write and manipulate computer keyboard and mouse; ability to hear and speak clearly; and body mobility to stoop, kneel, and bend and reach.
