    Description

    Responsibilities

    Basic Purpose

    Provides comprehensive civil/structural engineering design services for substation and/or transmission facilities, and to ensure that these facilities are constructed on schedule and within committed resource allocations.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develops economical, technically feasible, reliable civil/structural designs with minimal supervision and guidance. Selects and widely applies engineering principles, theories and concepts in the design of civil engineering projects. Develops substation/civil plans for sitework including grading plans, access roads, geotechnical studies, retaining walls, off-site improvements, drainage facilities, fencing and block walls, and landscaping. Designs and specifies substation steel structures, foundations, and control enclosures. Designs large diameter transmission line foundations in a variety of soil conditions. Creates foundation drawings, material specifications, and bid documents, and reviews and approves technical submittals. Oversees acquisition of all necessary construction approvals and permits from the authority having jurisdiction.
  • Provides accurate cost estimates and schedule input for use in company budgeting procedures such that cash flow requirements are identified.
  • Provides, mentoring, leadership, training and direction to fellow staff members, and provides technical design and project peer review.
  • Scopes, routes, sites substation projects and evaluates alternatives to find best value.
  • Evaluates, benchmarks, and recommends the creation and improvements of civil engineering standards and specifications. Performs studies, prepares and provides written and oral reports to management and internal and external customers.
  • Ensures all compliance aspects of position are known and followed; understands and complies with all policies, codes and regulations applicable to position and company. Performs all work independently with oversight at key junctions of the project.

    Performs related duties as assigned.

    Requirements

    Essential Education, Skills, and Environment

    Education and Work Experience
    Bachelor's degree from an accredited school in civil engineering and 5 years industry experience as a practicing engineer. Applicant must be a licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Nevada. If no PE license, then must have 8+ years as a practicing engineer and be able to obtain a PE license within six to twelve months from date-of-hire.

    Specialized Knowledge and Skills
    Demonstrated knowledge of:

    • Site development projects with specific experience in grading plans, cut/fill volume calculations, soil improvements including import and export of material, site access plans, slope stabilization, drainage and storm water retention.

    • Concrete foundations and structures including drilled piers, spread footings, reinforced equipment slabs, small building slabs, equipment anchorages.

    • Design and specification of retaining walls, perimeter block walls or fencing.

    • Design of steel structures for horizontal and vertical equipment loads, wind, snow and seismic loading, and deflection analysis.

    • Specification of structural tubing and shapes, base plates, bolted and welded connections, and protective finishes.

    Demonstrated skill such as:

    • Interpersonal and communication skills and

    • Ability to work closely with project team members that include customers, project managers, vendors, construction crews, contractors, and consultants.

    Equipment and Applications
    PCs, word processing, spreadsheets and database software.

    Work Environment and Physical Demands
    General office environment. Travel may be required up to 25% of work hours and may consist of travel to remote parts of Nevada in order to scope substation sites or transmission alignments and support design and construction. Walking over rugged terrain at high elevation may be required.

    Compensation

    Annual Salary: $100,700 (Min) to $118,400 (Mid); Up to 15% Short Term Incentive Plan target opportunity at the discretion of the company. This is a non-represented position.
