    Description

    The Manager of Network and Telecommunications role will be responsible for providing an elevated level of technical expertise to ensure the application of enterprise level telephony and data network services and aids in the achievement of the organization's overall strategy, objectives, and technology direction. This is achieved by planning, designing, and developing telephony, local area networks (LANs) and wide area networks (WANs) across the organization. Evaluates and recommends new products, maintains knowledge of emerging technologies for application to the good of the university. Analyze and resolve network hardware and software problems in a timely and accurate fashion and provide end user training where required. This position requires a proven team player, technical leadership, and guidance amid complex situations.

    WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING

    Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

    Strategy & Planning

    • Collaborate with management and department leaders to assess near- and long-term telephony and network capacity needs.
    • Create and maintain documentation as it relates to telecommunications, network configuration, network mapping, network diagraming, processes, and overall design.
    • Develop, implement, and maintain policies, standard operating procedures, and associated training plans for network and telecom administration, usage, and disaster recovery.
    • Research, design, and implement modern technologies and systems to upgrade or replace legacy technology or systems.

    Operational Management

    • Design and deploy company LANs, WANs, and wireless networks, including, routers, switches, firewalls, access points, network appliances, and other hardware.
    • Conduct research on network products, services, protocols, and standards to remain abreast of developments in the networking industry.
    • Oversee new and existing equipment, hardware, and software upgrades.
    • Interact and negotiate with vendors, outsourcers, and contractors to secure network products and services.
    • Configure networks to ensure their smooth and reliable operation for fulfilling business objectives and processes.
    • Monitor network performance and troubleshoot problem areas as needed.
    • Ensure network connectivity of all servers, workstations, telephony equipment, and other network appliances.
    • Practice network asset management, including maintenance of network component inventory and related documentation and technical specifications information.
    • Monitor and test network performance and provide network performance statistics and reports.
    • Perform security audits, and system backups and recovery of network infrastructure.
    • Manage Intermediate Network Telcom Engineer.
    • Perform other duties as assigned by management.

    WHAT YOU WILL NEED

    EDUCATION/EXPERTISE:

    • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in Network Engineering, Telecommunications, or Computer Science required. Equivalent years of experience will be considered in lieu of degree.
    • A minimum of 10 years' experience in networking and telephony.
    • Professional certifications preferred.

    JOB REQUIREMENTS/SKILLS/ETC:

    • Proven experience and success with enterprise class LAN, WAN, WLAN and Telecommunication design and implementation.
    • Proven experience with network capacity planning, and general network management best practices.
    • Proven experience with network security infrastructure, i.e. Next Generation Firewalls, Network Access Control (NAC), Switch & Router Security.
    • Excellent hands-on technical knowledge and experience working in an enterprise class network environment [multiple WAN locations, multiple data centers, VLAN (Virtual LANs) separation].
    • ExtremeEnterasys experience preferred.
    • Excellent hardware and IOS troubleshooting experience.
    • Network management, performance monitoring, up/down network monitoring, inventory, and backup tool software experience.
    • Competence with testing tools and procedures for voice and data circuits, packet capturing, and protocol analysis experience.
    • Good understanding of the organization's goals and objectives.
    • Proven experience with advanced routing protocols a plus.
    • Proven experience with network and telecommunication configurations for academic environments preferred.
    • Disaster recovery/business continuity planning experience preferred.
    • Advanced BGP routing experience preferred.
    • Experience with PBX systems.
    • Proven experience and administration of VOIP technologies.
    • Experience with security cameras and access control equipment a plus.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    • Job requires installing network equipment in many environments such as wiring closets, crawl spaces, drop ceilings and outdoors; Occasionally required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel crouch or crawl.
    • Visual acuity to use a keyboard and view a computer terminal.
    • Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand, and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp.
    • May require ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to visit other locations; or the ability to stand and walk.
    • Ability to occasionally lift, carry and/or move weight up to fifty (50) pounds and or exerting up to fifty (50) pounds of force.
    • Use of ladder when installing equipment in ceilings, outdoor poles, or rooftops.
    • Sitting and standing for extended periods of time.
