    DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
    The Houston Health Department (HHD) is dedicated to advancing Houston's environmental and public health goals. HHD works collaboratively with city, state, and community partners to conduct education, community engagement, and enforcement to promote healthy people and a sustainable environment. HHD seeks a Family Nurse Practitioner or a Women's Health Nurse Practitioner for Health and Multi-Service Center Operations to provide preventive medical care and treatment to patients in facilities, such as clinics and health centers, under written standing orders from a Chief Physician.

    The successful candidate will be signed off to work multiple service lines including but not limited to sexual health services, including assessment and treatment of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), Family Planning, Tuberculosis, and Immunizations.

    This position will report to the HHD Division Manager and may provide services across four (4) HHD health centers that are primarily funded through a cooperative agreement with the US HHS Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

    Job duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

    • Assesses public health patients' physical health status; performs prescribed physical examinations and preventive health treatments.

    • Requests, interprets, and evaluates diagnostic tests to identify and assess patients' clinical problems and health care needs.

    • Identifies patients' health status deviations; consults with and/or refers patients to physicians and appropriate health care professionals.

    • Interviews patients and records their health and social histories. Monitors patient records for inclusion of appropriate findings and recommendations. Participates in quality improvement activities.

    • Maintains professional licensure and keeps up to date with recent medical developments.

    • Interprets health assessment information to formulate and implement health care plans according to established policies.

    • Coordinates and administers prescribed medications and therapeutic agents.

    • Assists the nursing staff with teaching demonstrations; interprets proposed patient instructions.

    • Participates in a patient care team in a clinic setting along with social workers, nutritionists, and personnel from other disciplines.

    WORKING CONDITIONSThere are routine exposures to significant levels of heat, cold, moisture and air pollution. The position may involve periodic exposure to chemical substances and physical trauma of a minor nature, such as cuts, bruises and minor burns.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

    EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT
    Requires a Master's degree in advanced practice nursing (or completion of an advanced educational program of study appropriate for practice in an advance nursing specialty) recognized by the Board of Nursing Examiner.
    EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTOne (1) year of experience as a Registered Nurse is required.

    LICENSE/CERTIFICATIONMust be licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse and an Advanced Practicing Nurse in the State of Texas.
    PREFERENCES

    **Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.**

    • One or more years Nurse Practitioner experience in Family Planning and STD

    • Bilingual (English/Spanish), the ability to speak, read, and write fluently in English and Spanish

    • Working knowledge of STI's and/or women's health (history, epidemiological profile, transmission, prevention, treatment, sociopolitical issues)

    • Working knowledge of quality management and quality improvement methodologies

    • Working knowledge of health policies and regulations

    • Excellent written, oral, presentation, facilitation and interpersonal skills

    • Ability to handle and prioritize multiple, diverse assignments

    • Demonstrated cultural sensitivity and ability to work comfortably with diverse communities

    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs and other basic email and web software

    GENERAL INFORMATION
