    These full-time, non-exempt, positions are located at the Anoka County Jail in downtown Anoka.

    Pay & Benefits

    • Typical starting salary $63,960 ($30.75 per hour)
    • 2023 Anoka County Salary Schedule Grade 2106: $63,960 to $85,564 ($30.75 to $41.18 per hour)

    Work Location

    • This position will serve from the Anoka County's Jail located at 325 Jackson St., Anoka, MN 55303.
    • The Anoka County Jail is a 24/7 facility. Detention Deputy schedules include weekends and holidays.

    Job Duties and Responsibilities
    These examples are not all inclusive and are intended to be illustrative of primary responsibilities of an Anoka County Detention Deputy.

    • Provide direct supervision of up to 60 inmates in a common, secure housing unit when inmates are not confined to their cells.
    • Manage and mediate conflicts amongst inmates and interact with inmates by enforcing rules and facility regulations.
    • Maintain the security and safety of the Jail facility, inmates, and staff by monitoring cameras, alarms, doors, and the overall control panel in the centralized security control room.
    • Conduct inmate counts and searches for unlawful, unauthorized and or dangerous activity, perform frequent inmate well-being checks, prepare written reports, and log activities occurring within the jail.
    • Respond to and assess emergencies such as disturbances among inmates, fires, escape attempts, contraband recovery, medical situation including administering first aid and/or CPR as necessary and restore order and security.
    • Supervise inmate recreational and visiting periods as well as inmate housekeeping responsibilities within the housing units and inmate worker housekeeping activities throughout the facility such as kitchen and laundry duties.
    • Apply appropriate level of force (Use of Force Continuum) to gain compliance from inmates who are acting out of control.
    • Responsible for the intake and release of inmates in and out of the Jail facility be receiving, identifying, searching, photographing, fingerprinting, and booking inmates.
    • Receive, disburse, and account for inmate cash and property at time of booking and release.
    • Directly observe inmates submitting specimens for urinalysis as well as thoroughly search inmates.
    • May provide supervision of inmates during court and general courtroom security.

    Qualifications and Requirements:

    Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed

    • Must be at least 18 years of age.
    • High School diploma or equivalent education.
    • Possess a valid driver's license.
    • Must be able to credibly testify in a court of law.
    • Must successfully pass a thorough background investigation to include criminal, civil, employment, and financial history.

    Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed

    • Secondary education in corrections, law enforcement, criminal justice, behavioral/social science or related field.
    • Evidence-Based Practice Corrections Professional Certification from an accredited school
    • Experience using de-escalation techniques in a work setting.
    • Previous work-related experience.
    • First Aid and CPR certificates.

    No tattoos, scars, or brands that qualify as "Unauthorized Tattoos" under the Sheriff's Ofce Policy are allowed under any circumstances by any member of the Anoka County Sheriff's Ofce. Tattoos that cover more than 50 percent of the exposed area of the arm while wearing an unaltered short-sleeved shirt must be covered by a long-sleeved shirt while the employee is representing the Anoka County Sheriff's Ofce. The exposed area is the area from the bend of the wrist to the shirt sleeve. Tattoos on the head, face, neck, or hands are prohibited.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities needed:

    • Knowledge of criminal justice system, court procedures, applicable technology such as computer, radio, intercom, and other security/emergency equipment.
    • Ability to see, hear, remember and to analyze facts, exercise sound judgment and coordinate efforts to resolve problems.
    • Ability to engage with all people, including inmates, on a fair and impartial basis and in strict condentiality.
    • Ability to tolerate the stress associated with working in a potentially dangerous environment, deal with stressful situations, effectively handle emergencies, threats or harassment in a calm manner while maintaining control and de-escalating the situation.
    • Ability to stand and walk for long periods of time, bend, crouch, stoop, stretch, crawl periodically, lift and carry or drag objects/people weighing up to 100 pounds when responding to emergency situations and subdue inmates as necessary.
    • Must demonstrate personal characteristics of highest integrity, honesty, and trustworthiness consistent with effective detention work.
    • Must abide by all local, state, and federal laws

    NOTE: Applicants are NOT required to be certified by the Minnesota Peace Officer's Standard Board.

    Anoka County has determined that successfully passing a pre-employment criminal/driving background check, drug screen and DOT physical, and/or other qualifications checks may be necessary for certain positions.
