    Description
    POSITION PURPOSE:

    The Diesel Mechanic is responsible for the maintenance and repair of all corporation vehicles. Work involves the repair and replacement of engines, transmissions, electrical components, air systems, etc., general servicing and preventative maintenance procedures, and emergency repair work.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
    • Inspects, diagnoses, services, repairs, replaces, or installs engines, transmissions, electrical systems and equipment, fuel systems, hydraulic systems, ignition, emission, pneumatic, mechanical, related vehicle computerized systems, and air systems such as brakes and compressors.
    • Inspects, services, and repairs axle and other supporting systems.
    • Performs routine and preventative maintenance inspections and general servicing of vehicles and equipment, including changing fluids, greasing, safety checks, etc.
    • Conducts vehicle safety inspections and replaces defective parts and components.
    • Performs cutting and welding. Fabricates and installs a variety of parts and equipment.
    • Performs minor repairs, inspections, minor adjustments, testing, troubleshooting, cleaning, lubrication, and scheduled maintenance on all electrical, air conditioning, and heat related components in accordance with wiring diagrams, schematics, refrigeration flow diagrams, operation manuals, and manufacturers maintenance instructions.
    • Road tests vehicles to diagnose mechanical problems and evaluate service after repairs.
    • Responds to and aids in emergencies that require movement of corporation vehicles involved in incidents and accidents.
    • Completes relevant paperwork and reports.
    • Performs all tasks and assignments within the established safety practices and maintenance guidelines.

    OTHER FUNCTIONS:
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
    • None.

    EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
    • To perform this job successfully, an individual must have the following education and/or experience.
    • High school diploma or its equivalent (preferred); Formal trade school or an associate degree in automotive, diesel, or engineering program or a related field preferred.
    • Two years or more of diesel mechanic experience.
    • Valid Indiana commercial driver's license with passenger and air brake endorsements is required; or the ability to obtain the required license within six (6) months of hire.

    • Advanced knowledge of alternative fuel engines, such as Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), hybrid and electrical, diesel, and gasoline engine repairs.
    • Ability to diagnose, repair and troubleshoot a variety of complex bus and automotive mechanical problems.
    • Ability to select and use correct parts and tools, and test equipment to perform scheduled and unscheduled maintenance.
    • Operational knowledge of mandated safety principles related to personal protective equipment, chemical hazards, lockout/tag out, and general shop safety and cleanliness practices.
    • Ability to effectively communicate with others. Ability to make appropriate job decisions following standard procedures and policies.
    • Basic mathematical abilities (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division).
    • Ability to prioritize, organize, and manage tasks and time effectively and adapt to changes in workload.
    • Ability to deal courteously and effectively with supervisors and coworkers.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

    • Ability to work independently with work checked regularly.
    • Ability to remain stationary long periods, position self to work in confined spaces, and to move throughout the workday, occasionally between departments and facilities.
    • Ability to use tools to perform work, including removing and installing small parts and components and regularly adjusting, assembling, testing, and operating equipment (Some tools will be provided).
    • Ability to ascend and descend ladders and scaffolds to work on top of and beneath vehicles.
    • Ability to raise and lower objects weighing up to 50 lbs. overhead or up a level to another regularly during shift.
    • Requires exposure to heavy machinery/equipment, excessive noise, extreme temperatures, fumes/odors, some hazardous materials, and dirt/dust.
    • Must be able to pass all post-offer physical testing and be able to complete all physical job functions as defined in the Functional Job Description.
    • Ability to work 8- or 10-hour shifts, night and weekends shifts and overtime regularly due to assignment shifts being picked bi-annually according to the current collective bargaining agreement.

    DISCLAIMER:
    • The senior most qualified employee will be considered for this role.
    • Must pass the Defect Mechanic Assessment with a score of 75%, and the senior qualified employee will be who passed the test with the highest passing score.
