    Position Summary

    The Opportunity: Skagit Valley College (SVC) is seeking qualified equity-minded applicants for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position in the Allied Health Department. We are looking for a seasoned healthcare professional or an instructor experienced in medical education who is ready to help develop the next generation of professionals.

    The successful candidate will demonstrate exceptional teaching skills including those needed to effectively teach in an online or hybrid environment, enthusiasm for the subject matter, an inclusive and equity-driven approach to teaching and learning, and innovative pedagogy and teaching strategies. Candidates should be able and excited to teach a variety of lecture and laboratory-based coursework in the department. Faculty at SVC respect and work effectively with diverse students, colleagues, staff, and others in a campus climate that promotes innovative and equity-minded teaching, a diverse learning environment, and a strong focus on improving student success rates and addressing systemic inequities in access and achievement for all students.

    SVC Allied Health Faculty typically teach an equivalent of instructional units per quarter (3 classes) and College service. This position is expected to begin in Fall Quarter, September 2024.

    Skagit Valley College's Medical Assistant program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) and is sponsored by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), the organization recognized as the national professional association for medical assistants. Upon graduation, our medical assistant students are eligible to sit for the national Medical Assistant Certification Examination to become nationally certified medical assistants (CMA).

    Skagit Valley College's Pharmacy Technician Program is approved by the Washington State Pharmacy Quality Assurance Commission and recognized by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB). Upon graduation, our pharmacy technician students are eligible to sit for the national Pharmacy Technician Certification Examination to become a nationally certified pharmacy technician (CPhT).

    This position is based primarily at the Mount Vernon Campus; however, Instructors may be called upon to teach at the Whidbey Island Campus located in Oak Harbor.

    Duties and Responsibilities
    • Provide high-quality classroom instruction in Allied Health courses including but not limited to; all clinical medical assisting procedures within the medical assistant scope of practice; basic pharmacology; medical lab procedures; infection control, safety and emergency practices in the ambulatory medical facility; medical law and ethics as applied to the medical assistant scope of practice; anatomy & physiology; electronic medical records management; medical terminology and therapeutic patient communications;
    • Provide high-quality classroom instruction in Allied Health courses including but not limited to; all pharmacy technician sterile and non-sterile compounding within the pharmacy technician scope of practice; pharmacy law; pharmacy terminology; applied pharmacology; sterile compounding; non-sterile compounding; dispensing of medications; records management;
    • Maintain knowledge of the MAERB Core Curriculum and PTCB curriculum as well as the CAAHEP Standards and Guidelines as recommended by the medical assistant and Pharmacy Technician program directors;
    • Provide all course artifacts, competency sheets, and documentation as requested by the program director for accreditation purposes;
    • Engage in scholarly activities that complement and inform teaching;
    • Use inclusive and effective teaching methods to support and to enhance learning for students inside and outside of the classroom;
    • Create positive learning environment for diverse students, faculty and staff;
    • Collaborate with faculty from other disciplines or fields to develop and to provide integrative learning experiences;
    • Conduct ongoing development, assessment, and revision of curriculum that is responsive to local industry needs, reflects innovative pedagogy, and incorporates advances in the field of medical assistant and pharmacy technician;
    • Advise students and serve as a resource for faculty colleagues and staff;
    • Demonstrate multicultural understanding and foster equity;
    • Develop quality programs through active engagement with industry and participation in strategic planning, in assessment of program outcomes, and in taking action to address gaps or opportunities;
    • Participate in division/department and other college activities, including college governance, etc.;
    • Assist in marketing the programs and participate in student recruitment activities;
    • Actively participate in and develop effective working relationships with the medical assistant and pharmacy technician program advisory committees;
    • Work with program advisory committee members and local employers to facilitate student externship placements and job opportunities for students enrolled in the programs.
    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    Knowledge or understanding of:
    • Impart excitement and enthusiasm into teaching of medical assisting and pharmacy technician;
    • Demonstrate knowledge and familiarity with current theories, research, and practice in medical assisting and pharmacy technician;
    • Develop innovative programming, curricula, and pedagogy that incorporate program and general education learning outcomes;
    • Engage students through innovative instructional approaches including learning communities, service learning projects, contextualized learning, etc.;
    • Practice and adopt teaching methods/styles that support successful learning appropriate to a diverse student population, including underprepared students;
    • Adapt to a variety of teaching situations, including interdisciplinary learning communities, online and hybrid modalities, etc.;
    • Express appropriate awareness of the history of underrepresented groups and promote an equitable work and learning environment;
    • Work and interact effectively with colleagues, staff, students, administrators, and others of various cultural and socio-economic backgrounds;
    • Act according to principles of integrity, respect, open and honest communication, and collaboration.
    Qualifications

    Minimum Qualifications:
    • AAMA CMA (Certified Medical Assistant) or the ability to obtain one within six (6) months of hire;
    • Candidate must have at least one (1) of the following:
      • Two (2) years of recent (within 5 years) experience working in a medical environment or in a healthcare setting as a clinical medical assistant;
      • OR
      • Two (2) years of recent (within 5 years) experience teaching in a medical assistant degree or associate program
  • Associate's degree.
  • Preferred Qualifications:
    • WA state pharmacy technician credential and nationally certified from PTCB;
    • Two (2) years of recent experience in the pharmacy industry or pharmacy educational environment as a pharmacy technician;
    • Bachelor's Degree in Education, Allied Health, or a closely related field;
    • Additional Industry Professional Certifications in EHR training, clinical skills training, BLS instructor, or mental health first aid;
    • Experience showing increasing levels of responsibility as a lead or supervisor in the medical or pharmacy field;
    • Knowledge of and experience in working with the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), Pharmacy Quality Assurance Commission, and Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB);
    • Knowledge of and experience in creating and revising course curriculum, learning outcomes, and class schedules;
    • Experienced in securing and maintaining contracts with local employers for practicum placement of students in the Medical Assistant and Pharmacy Technician programs;
    • Fluent in oral and written Spanish language;
    Salary, Benefits, Conditions of Employment, Application Procedure

    Salary and Benefits:
    • Initial base annual salary placement for ranges from $72,818 to $97,091 for a standard 172-day contract. The College has a negotiated faculty wage scale in which placement on the salary structure is in accordance with the SVC Federation of Teachers Collective Bargaining Agreement.
    • A standard 172-day contract is written annually for the period of September to June. Late contracts will be prorated on the basis of work days remaining in the contract year.
    • This position is exempt from the overtime pay requirements of The Fair Labor Standards Act.
    • This is a union-represented position subject to a Collective Bargaining Agreement. The College has a negotiated faculty wage scale in which placement on the salary structure is in accordance with the SVC Federation of Teachers Collective Bargaining Agreement.
